With the second week of May upon us, we wanted to bring awareness to how a root canal can help you when your tooth is infected and show you the steps to restoration.

Traditionally, a root canal has a poor reputation among dental procedures and is often associated with pain. However, it is the infection of the tooth that causes most of the pain. Additionally, modern technology has eliminated most of what you can feel during the procedure. This makes this unwanted procedure quite helpful and beneficial.

Patients often wonder what the difference is between plaque and tartar?

Plaque is what forms on your teeth day after day and can be brushed off with a toothbrush. It forms quickly, starting right after you eat. It is soft and sticky.

Tartar (also called dental calculus) is a hard and crusty version of plaque that is formed slowly over time from improper brushing or missed crevices. Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed by a professional, namely a dental hygienist, when they clean your teeth. Tartar can leads to gum disease and it is important to maintain regular cleanings to prevent the gums from receding due to tartar buildup.

Springtime is no doubt here and for many people in Oklahoma, so are allergies. If you suffer from allergies, your mouth may be drying out due to allergy medication or breathing through your mouth due to congestion. With a dryer mouth, there is less saliva to wash away bacteria that leads to cavities.

Please remember to drink more water during this season if you suffer from allergies and consider a dental checkup in late spring or early summer to make sure your teeth are as healthy as they can be after allergy season ends.
