The three dentists and assistant Julie attended Brazos Junior High career day on March 10th. We talked with the students about dentistry and dental assisting. Dr. Jakob helped the students do composite fillings on plastic testing teeth that he had from dental school. Dr. James and Jeff also helped explain how extractions and other procedures are done. Julie explained how assistants help care for patients and what skills are necessary to perform the job. It was great to meet and discuss our passions with so many students!

Last week, the three doctors and assistant Kaylee met with 225 kids from East Bernard Elementary School 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. Dr. Jakob shared four tips to help teach the elementary students how to care for their oral health. Dr. James, Dr. Jeff and Kaylee demonstrated proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques. We also gave out 225 goodie bags with tooth brushes, tooth paste and activity sheets! Cavities are the most common preventable disease found in children. With proper education and supplies, children CAN be CAVITY FREE!

Doctor Highlight:
Jeffrey A. Jalowy DDS

Dr. Jeff is proud to be a lifetime native of East Bernard! He grew up on Fitzgerald street just across from the East Bernard school where his mother, Henriette, was a kindergarten teacher. Dr. Jeff spent lots of time outdoors with Dr. James while hunting and fishing. He also has many memories of riding his bike up and down the streets of town with other kids and swimming in the public pool. When people asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, his response was “I’m going to be a cowboy!”

Dr. Jeff is a 1983 graduate of East Bernard High School. He was involved in sports and
played on the 2A State Championship runner up varsity football team of 1982. He also was involved in the FFA and enjoyed raising and showing heifers.

After high school, Dr. Jeff attended college at Texas A&M University. He was interested in becoming a vet or a doctor at first, but through various experiences, he eventually decided he wanted to apply to dental school. Dr. Jeff received a Bachelor Degree of Zoology in 1987 from Texas A&M and then was accepted to dental school in San Antonio.

Dr. Jeff graduated from the UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Dentistry in 1991 with a Doctorate in Dental Science. He also received extra training in orthodontics.

Dr. Jeff has worked in East Bernard since 1991 and has a passion for providing general dental and orthodontic services to the community. He will be glad to serve you and your family!

You will be pleased to know that he did fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy! Dr. Jeff loves spending time attending to his cattle and chickens! He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month! Regular exams and preventive care provided by a dentist is important to detect problems early. Routine visits to the dentist also help educate your child on how to properly care for their teeth and how proper nutrition can prevent cavities. Doctor Highlight:
James J. Jalowy DDS

Dr. James grew up just a few miles up highway 60 on the Bernard Prairie where his family worked together to operate a farm. He attended East Bernard High School, played football on the 1958 state quarterfinal team, and graduated in 1960. Dr. James was the youngest of 3 children and his father gave him the opportunity to go to college instead of working on the farm. He attended Wharton County Junior College for two years and then got accepted to the University of Texas Dental School in Houston. Dr. James graduated from dental school in 1966 and has been proudly serving East Bernard and the surrounding areas for 56 years! Dr. James has a “green thumb” and has created a beautiful view at the back of the office that includes several colorful plants and a waterfall. He is young at heart and tells everyone that he has turned 39 years old 40 times. He is a proud grandfather to eight and a great-grandfather of two. He loves to care for others, hunt, grow vegetables and fruit, and spend time with family.

Dr. James has created a legacy that is being carried on by his son, Dr. Jeff, and grandson, Dr. Jakob. He still practices three days a week and will be glad to serve you!
