Going to the hospital? Don't forget your toothbrush. It could do more than keep your teeth clean. It may help protect your lungs, too. 🪥🏥
🪥 A toothbrush may be one of the most important items to have during a hospital stay.
Research involving nearly 9,000 hospitalized patients found that improving oral care and encouraging regular tooth brushing was associated with a 60% reduction in non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia.
When we're sick, bacteria can quickly build up on the teeth, gums, and tongue. These bacteria may be inhaled into the lungs, increasing the risk of serious infection. Brushing helps reduce that bacterial burden and may play an important role in protecting overall health.
If you're admitted to the hospital:
✅ Brush your teeth as soon as possible
✅ Ask for a toothbrush if one isn't provided
✅ Have a family member or friend bring one
✅ Pack a toothbrush ahead of planned procedures or hospital stays
Oral health is more than a healthy smile. It can be an important part of your recovery.
