So if extracted wisdom teeth can be sent off for students and researchers to study, what gives? 🤨 Are you not allowed to keep your own teeth after they’re removed?

Skipping over why you might want to keep your extracted teeth😅 it is technically NOT 🙅 illegal to do so in the United States. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

☝️ This does NOT mean an oral surgeon will let you keep the tooth upon request. Because of the biohazardous nature of extracted wisdom teeth, every practice has their own individual policies on the matter.
☝️ If they DO allow for this, they’ll likely have to sterilize the tooth before giving it back to you. It’s important to talk to the oral surgeon about this in advance so they can prepare properly.
☝️ If your tooth has a metal filling, do NOT attempt to remove it yourself! Filling removal has to be done carefully by a specialist in order to avoid mercury exposure. ☣️
☝️ Selling teeth is highly restricted. So if you wanted to keep your wisdom tooth for the cash value 🤨 you’ll want to reconsider.

There you have it – kind of a weird fact, but the more you know!😂

Ever wonder what happens to wisdom teeth after they’re extracted? They have to go somewhere…right?🤨

Technically, wisdom teeth are considered to be biohazards. 😅

They usually contain remnants of the patient’s blood, saliva, and oral tissue, all of which are potentially infectious materials. So an oral surgeon like your team here might do one of three things with your extracted tooth:

1️⃣ Dispose of it carefully like we would for other medical waste
2️⃣ Send it to a special recycling center so any fillings can be safely removed before disposal
3️⃣ Sterilize and preserve it for the purposes of dental education

That last option means exactly what you think it means: dental students sometimes examine and practice with real teeth!

Another educational use for extracted wisdom teeth is in research settings, where they can be used as a sort of “test subject” for new treatments and techniques.

Why bone grafting sounds scarier than it is 🦷

Hearing the words "bone graft" can sound intimidating, but it's actually a common procedure that helps create a stronger foundation for future dental implants💪

Bone grafting may be recommended after a tooth extraction or when there isn't enough healthy bone to properly support an implant🙂

Every patient's situation is unique, and we'll walk you through your options every step of the way so you know exactly what to expect.

Treating a lip- or tongue-tie is relatively simple – and painless. ✨ As experienced oral surgeons, our team is well-qualified to help you address this condition.

1️⃣ After confirming that you, your baby, or your teen has a lip/tongue-tie, we’ll schedule a “frenectomy” (which is what these types of treatments are called). Sometimes we can perform frenectomies on the same day we conduct an oral exam.

2️⃣ When it’s time for the frenectomy, we’ll administer a local anesthesia to numb the treatment area.

3️⃣ Once you or your child’s comfort is secured, we’ll carefully cut the excess tissue responsible for the lip/tongue-tie.

And that’s it! The lip/tongue-tie will be considered released.😁

It is important to do some oral exercises as part of post-op. Otherwise, the tissue could reattach and recreate the lip/tongue-tie. 🫠 Rest assured, we’ll send you home with detailed instructions for how to prevent this.📝

A fussy baby could be hungry or tired…or they could have a lip/tongue-tie. 😳

Here’s how these two things are connected:

🍼 Lip- and tongue-ties occur when the strand of tissue connecting the lip or tongue (called the “frenulum”) to the mouth is too thick or too short.
🍼This restricts lip or tongue movement, limiting how effectively your baby can use their mouth for things like nursing.
🍼As a result, they might become more tired more quickly while nursing or have trouble latching. This is just as frustrating for them as it is for you!

Many doctors nowadays check for lip/tongue-tie soon after birth, but the condition is not always easy to identify. 😅 If your baby is prone to colic, our gentle and compassionate team would be happy to examine their mouth and confirm whether they have a lip- or tongue-tie.
