Emerging research suggests a surprising connection between oral health and Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists have detected the gum bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer’s, revealing a potential link between oral inflammation and neurodegeneration. These bacteria release enzymes called gingipains, which can damage brain cells and interfere with communication between neurons.
Periodontitis, more than just a gum problem, is a systemic inflammatory condition. When harmful oral bacteria enter the bloodstream, they may reach the brain, activating immune responses that contribute to inflammation—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Experimental studies indicate these bacterial toxins can increase amyloid-beta buildup, harm neurons, and potentially accelerate memory decline.
While this research doesn’t prove causation, it highlights the critical connection between oral bacteria, inflammation, and brain health, offering new avenues for preventive strategies.
