Summer calendars fill quickly with travel, camps, activities, and family events, which makes early June a smart time to get ahead. If you have been meaning to schedule your next cleaning or exam, now is a great time to do it. It is also a perfect time for new patients to get established with Jackson Family Dentistry before the season becomes even busier. Hello, June. Summer has a way of filling calendars quickly with travel, camps, family events, and a lot of shifting routines. That makes this a great time to recommit to the basics that help keep smiles healthy: brushing well, flossing daily, drinking more water, and staying on schedule with preventive care. At Jackson Family Dentistry, we remind patients all the time that oral health success usually comes from consistency, not perfection. Small habits repeated over time often make the biggest difference.

Today is a reminder that to***co affects oral health as well as overall health. Choosing to reduce or quit to***co can be a meaningful step for your mouth, your body, and your long-term well-being. Oral health and overall wellness are closely connected, and small steps in the right direction can matter more than people realize.

Sensitive teeth are common, but the cause is not always simple. Enamel wear, recession, cavities, cracks, and clenching can all play a role. Sensitivity is one of those symptoms that should be evaluated rather than guessed at, especially if it keeps coming back. A good diagnosis helps identify the real cause and guide the right solution.

As a former President of the Academy for Sports Dentistry, I think about sports and oral health a lot. This report from USA Track & Field hits on things I discuss with athletes β€” and their parents β€” regularly.

Many habits that support athletic performance quietly wreck teeth:
πŸƒ Sports drinks are highly acidic and sugar-loaded. They erode enamel with chronic exposure.
🍝 High-carbohydrate athletic diets fuel workouts β€” but also fuel the bacteria that cause cavities.
πŸ’¨ Mouth breathing during intense exercise leaves acidic residue on tooth surfaces without saliva's protective buffering.

What to do:
β†’ Use a straw for sports beverages when possible
β†’ Rinse with water after consuming sports drinks
β†’ Wait 30-60 minutes before brushing after acidic drink consumption
β†’ Wear a properly fitted mouthguard in contact sports
β†’ Keep regular dental appointments year-round

My FADI credential, Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, reflects another part of my professional philosophy that matters to me: service, leadership, and a commitment to dentistry beyond the walls of the operatory. Patients may not focus on the credential itself, but I believe they benefit from being cared for by a doctor who values professionalism, service, and the broader mission of the profession.

When kids enter school for the first time, many states require a dental screening. And what those screenings are showing is sobering: a significant number of kindergartners are arriving with untreated cavities, early gum disease, or no record of having seen a dentist at all.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease β€” more prevalent than asthma and obesity combined. It causes pain, disrupts sleep, affects eating and nutrition, and contributes to missed school days and difficulty concentrating.

The good news: it's preventable. Early dental visits, fluoride toothpaste from the first tooth, and consistent brushing habits can dramatically change these numbers.

Dry mouth can be more than uncomfortable. Saliva plays an important protective role in the mouth, helping support comfort and reduce dental risk. When the mouth feels dry regularly, especially because of medications or other contributing factors, teeth may become more vulnerable over time. If dry mouth is something you deal with often, it is worth mentioning at your next visit.
