Did you know there are different types of dental cleanings?

We evaluate your periodontal health by taking X-Rays, and checking your periodontal charting or gum measurements to accurately assess the type of cleaning you may need.

1. Prophylaxis cleaning is a preventative cleaning that we do to prevent periodontal disease and other disease you can get in your mouth!
2. Scaling and Root Planing or SRP is what we call a “deep cleaning”. These cleanings occur if you have a lot of bacteria buildup between your teeth along with periodontal disease and the breakdown of the gums and bone surrounding your teeth! This also may occur if you have missed cleanings over a long period of time so make sure you come in regularly!
3. Periodontal maintenance appointment often occurs once you have had a Scaling and Root Planing before and are now coming in to maintain your periodontal condition.. Once periodontal disease or bone loss has occurred, you can not reverse it so you may have to come in more often for cleanings to ensure that we are preventing this disease from progressing!
4. Gross Debridement often refers to a cleaning where we remove part of the bacteria buildup so the doctor is able to do a proper examination. Sometimes this may need to happen if you have a lot of buildup blocking us from checking the health of your teeth and can happen if you have not been to the dentist in a while.

Make sure you are coming in regularly! 🦷🪥🤍

What happens during your dental cleaning? 🦷😍

During your regular dental visit, we first take any X-Rays that you are due for or that we need, then we check your perio charting or gum measurements to evaluate your periodontal health and make sure you are flossing! After all that is done we are able to accurately diagnose which type of cleaning you will need. We clean your teeth make them nice and shiny and the doctor will come in to do an examination to ensure everything is healthy and you do not have any cavities! During all of that it is our job to ensure that you have a great experience!

Manual or electric toothbrush? 🪥🦷

Either option is great for different reasons!
We often recommend an electric toothbrush for patients with recession, patients that scrub too hard with the manual toothbrush, and patients that need a little more help with brushing their teeth! You want to angle your toothbrush towards the gum line and gently drag your brush and let it do all the work for you!

Manual is a great option for people that don’t love an electric toothbrush as long as you are using it properly! You want to angle your toothbrush at the gum line and gently use back and forth strokes, and do not brush too hard!

Make sure you are flossing using the C shape method and flossing UNDER THE GUMS!! All of our bacteria likes to hide under the gums and cause inflammation and bleeding! 🦠
