The First Park System in the U.S.

On June 3, 1893 (133 years ago today), Governor William Eustis Russell signed a bill creating the Metropolitan Parks Commission, the nation's first regional park system. It was the result of planning and politicking by a group of far-sighted Bostonians concerned about rapidly disappearing open space.

With its first funding, the new commission acquired over 7,000 acres in the space of 18 months. By 1900, it had protected 9,000 acres and built nine scenic parkways within 12 miles of Boston.

Today, the park system is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. This system encompasses almost 20,000 acres and includes woodlands, beaches, swimming pools, skating rinks and bicycle paths. Probably the best known park in this system is the Charles River Esplanade.

The Blake and Amory Building

The Blake and Amory Building is a historic commercial building at the corner of Temple Place and Washington Street in Downtown Crossing, in times gone by, the main shopping district of Boston. The eleven-story building was designed by well-known Boston architect Arthur Hunnewell Bowditch, and constructed in two phases between 1904 and 1908. The building is architecturally noted for its large windows and Gothic details. Early tenants that occupied the upper-level offices were predominantly associated with the garment and fabric trade, with the lower floors housing a variety of retail stores.

The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 2014 (12 years ago today).

After an extensive renovation project, the Godfrey Hotel Boston opened in the historic Blake and Amory Building in 2016.

All Walks of Life

On June 1, 1986 (40 years ago today) 4,000 people gathered on the Common for an event called "All Walks of Life," a fund raiser walk to support the services of the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. The song, "That's What Friends are For" by Dionne Warwick became the walk's anthem and has been sung at every walk since the beginning.

Thirty-one years ago, the AIDS epidemic was in its infancy. At the time, a diagnosis of HIV was a death sentence. In 1986 many lives had already been lost to an illness we knew very little about. The thousands of people who came out for the first walk were mainly Bostonians who had friends or loved-ones that had contracted the illness. The first walk raised $325,000.

The event has been held every first Sunday in June since 1986.

Today the event is known as the AIDS Walk Boston and 5K Run. This year the event will be held on Sunday, June 5. In 1997 the walk was moved from the Common to the Hatch Shell. The walk now begins and ends on the Esplanade. The run travels through Boston, Brookline and Cambridge.

In the past 30 years, more than 200,000 people have participated in the annual event that has raised $30 million total for the programs and services of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.

The office of the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is located at 75 Armory Street, Roxbury.

Mary Rose Sinks in Boston Harbor

On May 27, 1640 (385 years ago today) an explosion aboard the Mary Rose sunk the British man-of-war in Boston Harbor, killing fourteen people. Shortly before the ammunition exploded, the captain declined Governor John Winthrop’s invitation to bring his crew ashore for church services, stating that he would hold his own services on board the ship.

The wreck of the Mary Rose was discovered in 1971 and was raised on October 11, 1982 by the Mary Rose Trust in one of the most complex and expensive maritime salvage projects in history.
