Dr. Hamada recently led the discussion at the Airway Exchange Group’s last meeting. Drs. Kris Norbo and Joshua Kay took a deep dive into pediatric growth and development and sleep studies.

Dr. Hamada’s goal of bridging dentistry and medicine to be able to better serve our population is now happening in real time!

There is more to a bite than what you can see from the front.

In this case, the upper front teeth significantly overlap the lower front teeth. The redness and inflammation around the gums can also be a sign of chronic mouth breathing. The edges of the teeth are also worn flat.

This bite, reddened gum tissue, and tooth wear are clear dental signs that this child’s sleep is compromised. Each patient is unique and presents with different symptoms. But those very symptoms are the clues that Dr. Hamada has learned to identify to root out the cause of your child’s orthodontic and oftentimes health issues.

Loud breathing in children is never normal or something they’ll grow out of…

Regular snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, frequent waking, wetting the bed, or unusual sleeping positions are signs that a child is working harder to breathe than she should during sleep.

The way the jaws and palate develop directly affects the space available for the tongue. When the palate is too narrow or too far back in space, the tongue can be pushed into the airway. No parent would ever want their child to struggle to breathe, but restless sleep can indicate just that.

Waiting until all of the permanent teeth have erupted can mean missing an important window for growth and development… it’s a bit like waiting to call for help until the emergency has passed.

When a child is still growing, the jaws can be guided to create room for the permanent teeth while also actively growing the airway space.

Our modern way of life, including bottle-feeding, pacifiers, baby food, processed foods, and a general lack of chewing, is resulting in jaws that are much smaller than in previous years. Early orthodontic treatment can reverse some of the effects of modern living and often means better breathing, better sleeping, and better focus.

Sometimes the clues are there long before orthodontic treatment begins.

This patient had a history of tooth decay despite eating a healthy diet. In fact, he grows some of his own vegetables! His mom, an experienced and attentive feeding therapist, was concerned about his chronic mouth breathing and knew that traditional orthodontics was not the best solution for him.

After about a year, he is sleeping better, breathing through his nose, and truly thriving. He is even sharing some of his homegrown vegetables with us!

It takes a well-educated, dedicated, multidisciplinary team to help children grow and thrive the way they were created to!

The shape of the palate tells a story all on its own…

This patient came to us experiencing anxiety, poor sleep quality, and drooling during sleep. His vaulted palatal architecture indicated that his tongue was not resting where nature intended: against the roof of his mouth.

Without proper tongue posture, the sides of the palate can grow downward rather than outward. This can create a high, narrow vault instead of a broader, more gently domed shape. A vaulted palate can increase resistance to nasal airflow and contribute to chronic mouth breathing, a longer facial growth pattern, and a more recessed lower jaw.

This is why we look at so much more than straight teeth. The way the jaws are developing can give us important clues about a child’s breathing, sleep, and overall health.
