Items we skip:

❌ Sports drinks
❌ Juice
❌ Carby, crunchy snacks that leave sugar on teeth (think crackers and goldfish)
❌ Fruit snacks and gummy bears remain for special treats and not an everyday snack!

Did you know that over 50% of children in Colorado enter kindergarten lacking the basic developmental skills they will need to learn to read and succeed in school?

Well, a local nonprofit, , is working to combat this by providing Colorado families with the tools and resources to read aloud together every day from when their children are 6 months old to 5 years old.

Join us as we collect gently-used children’s books this summer at Rise and Shine Pediatric Dentistry to benefit Reach Out and Read Colorado! 📚

We ask that book donations meet the following criteria:

- Be new or gently used (covers and pages intact, clean and unmarked pages)
- Books are for children aged 0-18
- No textbooks, no coloring or activity books
- No books with sensitive themes such as death, religion, divorce or abuse

Tooth Tip Tuesday: Lip and Tongue Ties

👅 What does a pediatric dentist look for when evaluating a lip or tongue tie?

A lip or tongue tie occurs when the tissue connecting the lip or tongue is tighter, shorter, or thicker than usual, which can sometimes affect function.

When we evaluate a child, we’re looking at more than just how the tissue looks—we assess how it functions. Some things we consider include:

✔️ Feeding challenges in infants

✔️ Difficulty latching during breastfeeding

✔️ Limited tongue movement

✔️ Speech concerns

✔️ Trouble cleaning food from teeth

✔️ Gaps between the front teeth related to a lip tie

✔️ Oral development and growth

Not every lip or tongue tie requires treatment. Our goal is to determine whether the tie is impacting your child’s feeding, speech, oral health, or overall function.

If you have concerns about your child’s feeding, speech, or oral development, we’re happy to help guide you through an evaluation and discuss your options.

Anyone else always frantically reprimanding their kids when they try to walk or run with a toothbrush in their mouth?!

This is a battle you SHOULD fight. Walking around (or running) with a toothbrush in your mouth is super dangerous for kids. A slip or a bump could lead to cuts or injuries inside the mouth, injuries to the teeth, or even injuries to the throat.

We remind our kids daily:
✅Stand still at the sink or sit on the counter
✅Brush for two minutes
✅Spit, rinse, and smile...you're all done!

This helps brushing time be focused, efficient, and safe!

Summer snack season is here...and so are cavity risks!

When kids snack all day teeth don’t get a break!

Try these easy swaps to protect your smiles all summer long:
Fruit snacks —> watermelon 🍉
Juice boxes —> water or milk 💧
Popsicles —> yogurt of smoothie pops 🍓
Crackers or goldfish —> cheese + crunchy veggies 🧀

More frequent sugary snacks = more acid attacks on teeth 🦷

We also aim to give our kids designated snack times so that they don’t end up grazing all day long! ⏰

At Rise and Shine, we practice sensory informed dentistry!

What does this mean exactly?

A visit to the doctor can be physically and mentally overwhelming for some kiddos. We designed our practice to feel easier on the senses for children who may have sensory processing differences.

We offer:
-Sensory friendly seating in our quiet, calm kids waiting area. We have mats, swivel chairs, and bean bags to help your child relax their body before they even begin their appointment.
-In our clinical treatment area, we use weighted stuffies, vibrating pods, weighted blankets, or vibrating stuffies for kids to hold during their exam. We also adjust lighting in our clinic so overhead lights aren’t too bright.
-After your appointment, we will move into a calm consultation room where your child can play, engage in big body movement, or just rest while the caregiver debriefs the exam with Dr. V.
