Does your child always seem to have their mouth open?

Mouth breathing can be easy to overlook - especially if your child has always done it. But persistent mouth breathing can be a clue that something is making it difficult for them to breath through their nose.

What to look for:
👄Lips resting open
💤Sleeping with their mouth open
🥱Snoring or restless sleep
😛Tongue resting low in the mouth
💦Dry mouth of frequent thirst
🦷Changes in how the teeth or jaws are developing

If you’ve noticed a few of the above symptoms, let Dr. V know at your next visit and we will take a closer look!

Does your child dislike the taste of toothpaste? Try a flavor experiement...

Not every child is a big fan of mint. If applying toothpaste is making brushing a battle, let your child experiment with different ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste flavors to find one they actually enjoy.

Try:
🍓Strawberry
🍉Watermelon
🍬Bubblegum
🛍️Or take them shopping and let them pick out a new flavor to try

Like anything with young children, giving them some control over the flavor can help brushing feel like more fun and less of a chore. Also, we love to hear tips and tricks that have worked well for you so please share!

Smoothie popsicles are a summer staple at our house. We typically pour unfinished or leftover smoothies right into our molds and freeze them for a smile-friendly treat. 🍉🍑🍌

Here is our go-to recipe!
1 banana (fresh or frozen)
1 cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup plain Greek Yogurt
1 splash of milk or coconut water

Why we love them:
🍓Naturally sweet with no added sugar!
🥛Calcium and protein from the Greek yogurt help support strong teeth
🥤A refreshing alternative to sugary frozen treats

Many families ask us about the shade of their children’s teeth. What is ‘normal’ in terms of color? 🦷

The answer is that there is a wide range of ‘normal’ concerning shades of teeth. The most important thing to do to keep your smile bright is to commit to a twice daily brushing routine and a daily flossing routine. ⏰

If your teen shows interest in whitening their permanent teeth, Dr. Villasenor suggests trying whitening toothpaste first. While slightly more abrasive and able to fight stain, this is less likely to cause sensitivity than other whitening agents. For tenacious stains that don’t improve with whitening toothpaste, Dr. Villasenor recommends trying Classic Crest Whitestrips. 🤍
