A new study announced by the Journal of the American Dental Association has found that “more than 20% of children need restorative treatment by the time of their first dental exam,” and “the risk of treatment also increases with each year a child waits to see the dentist.” The study included “706,636 privately insured children ages 6 months to 6 years old to shed light on the relationship between the age at first visit and restorative treatment needs.” Early childhood caries “remains the most common, preventable infectious disease among children in the United States, with 21.4% of children aged 2 through 5 years having caries and 8.8% having untreated caries,” wrote the group.
The message we want to share is that helping your child care for their teeth at a young age will not only save you money, but provide improved quality of life for your child. We want everyone to enjoy their SMILE!

We are told often to FOLLOW THE SCIENCE; but sometimes people's perceptions are not always based on science. For example:

The "market research platform DentaVox asked 5,551 people how their lifestyle affected their oral health,” and “the responses weren’t always accurate, especially when it came to alcohol and smoking.” For instance, one “alcohol-related myth that 22% of respondents believed is that alcohol kills bacteria and therefore eliminates dental plaque.” Concerning how smoking affects oral health, “one-third of respondents said tooth discoloration was the only problem caused by smoking.” However, 93% of participants “correctly pointed out that smoking can lead to oral cancer.”

As we work to learn the facts in order to maintain healthy smiles we will continue to have a great reasons to SMILE!

It is good to know...and right now it is good to know how to protect us, our families and our patients from getting COVID. The Texas Department of human services shares this information about COVID:

Current understanding about how the virus that causes COVID‑19 spreads is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person:

- Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
- Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
- COVID‑19 may be spread by people who are not showing any symptoms.
The virus may also be spread through surfaces:

- By a person touching a surface or object that has virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.
- This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about how this virus spreads.

So by washing your hands frequently, trying not to touch your face and maintaining social distancing we can help help to keep all of us SMILING!
