Alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, but research shows it can reduce and disrupt REM sleep later in the night. 💤

REM sleep plays an important role in memory consolidation, emotional processing, and cognitive function.

Alcohol also relaxes the muscles of the upper airway, which can increase airway collapsibility and worsen obstructive sleep apnea in susceptible individuals.

As a result, sleep may become more fragmented, even when total sleep time appears unchanged.

Spoiler alert: you don’t even get those values of fluoride in your body unless you are swallowing the toothpaste.

Yes, matcha contains fluoride — and more than most teas. Tea plants naturally accumulate fluoride from soil into their leaves, and since matcha is the whole ground leaf rather than an infusion, you ingest everything in it. A typical serving of matcha delivers roughly 0.3–1 mg of fluoride.

For comparison: fluoridated tap water in the US is set at 0.7 mg per liter, so a cup of matcha can rival or exceed a liter of tap water. Toothpaste is far more concentrated, around 1,000–1,500 ppm, but you spit it out; a pea-sized amount that’s fully swallowed would be roughly 0.25–0.5 mg.

Practically, a serving or two of matcha a day is well within safe intake (around 10 mg/day). The ingested fluoride from tea may even offer mild cavity protection systemically, though topical fluoride from toothpaste is what does most of the cavity-fighting work. Dr. Adri would probably tell you the same — drink the matcha, keep brushing.
