“But my insurance says I get 2 free cleanings a year” is something we hear almost every week, and we get why it’s confusing.

Here’s the truth: that “2 free cleanings” language usually applies to a regular cleaning (prophy) for healthy gums. If you have gum disease, you’re likely looking at scaling and root planing followed by perio maintenance every 3 to 4 months, and those are typically covered at 50 to 80%, not 100%, because they’re treating a condition rather than just keeping things clean.
