Today is National Senior Citizens' Day which is a day to honor senior members of our community. As a dental office, our goal is to help our patients keep their teeth healthy for a lifetime. Here are some tips regarding a couple common issues that often impact senior adults:
#1. One of the side effects of taking certain medications is dry mouth, which makes your teeth more prone to decay. Try to stay hydrated as much as possible and ask your dentist/hygienist about mouthwash/lozenge options for dry mouth. Additionally, avoid smoking/vaping as these habits dry out your mouth even more.
#2. As we age, teeth become more brittle due to various factors including years of continued use. Diet and nutrition are important to consider as eating healthy foods and drinks will help protect teeth more than a diet of highly processed foods and drinks, which often contribute to the development of harmful cavity-causing bacteria.
#3. Flossing and gum health. Oftentimes with age and other external factors such as aggressive brushing, gum disease, and smoking/vaping/tobacco use can lead to the tissues surrounding your teeth to recede. This can make flossing a challenge, especially when relying on traditional methods alone. Thankfully there are alternatives to help, such as interproximal brushes, super floss, and water flossers. For more information you can always ask your dental hygienist/dentist about the best flossing methods to help protect and care for your teeth.

Toothache troubles? We can help you with that! As we celebrate National "Align Your Teeth" Day, here are some benefits that can come from having either braces or Invisalign/clear aligner options.
#1. If you have teeth that overlap or teeth that are turned a different way then they should be, straightening them helps make it easier for you to keep them clean at home, as buildup and food particles love to get in the "hard-to-access" areas, which raises your risk for gum inflammation as well as cavities.
#2. Aligning your teeth is the same principle as getting your vehicle tires aligned. If your tires aren't aligned, the tires wear out more easily. When your teeth are aligned correctly, your biting forces are distributed more evenly, helping reduce unnecessary wear and tear on your teeth.

In observance of National Fresh Breath Day, we would like to emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy mouth to prevent halitosis. (another word for bad breath) To ensure fresh and clean breath, follow these essential tips:
#1. When brushing your teeth, don't forget to clean your tongue as well. It's essential to remove bacteria and food particles that can accumulate on its surface. You can use a tongue scraper, soft-bristled manual toothbrush, or a soft electric toothbrush on its lowest setting.
#2. Flossing is also crucial as it reaches areas between your teeth that your toothbrush can't. Food and bacteria trapped in these spaces can negatively impact your breath.
If you're struggling with bad breath and can't determine the cause, our team at Today's Dental is here to help. Contact us at (423) 775-9971 to schedule an appointment.
