This scenario happens all the time... We tell a patient that they have cavities and the response is "but it doesn't hurt, so I should be fine, I don't need a filling."
Think again! Once a cavity starts to hurt, you're probably looking at more that just a filling.

When a cavity starts, it begins in the enamel layer of your tooth. Enamel is the strongest part of your tooth and it has no nerve endings. So in the early stages of cavitation, there is no way for the enamel to signal to the nerves in your tooth that there is a problem. When the cavity reaches the inner layer of your tooth where there are nerve endings, you will begin to feel the familiar and dreaded pangs of sensitivity and pain. Symptoms will be short, sharp pain due to hot, cold or sweet stimuli. Once the decay has spread through most of that inner layer, you are likely looking at a crown and in some cases a root canal.

So bottom line, when we say you need a filling but you aren't having any pain, we're catching things in the early stages, saving you from pain and infection and also saving you on the cost of more extensive treatment!
