The Tooth Fairy Can Help You!

Losing a tooth and waiting for a visit from the tooth fairy is an exciting time for your child! Instead of letting the visit be all about rewards and money under the pillow, try using a letter from the tooth fairy as a means to encourage good dental care habits. The possibilities are endless so keep it short and don’t use all your ideas in the first letter. Make it as artistic or straightforward as you wish but remember to keep it manageable as it will set a precedent for the future. Tooth fairy letters are just one idea that makes losing a tooth a fun and magical moment in your kids’ lives. We welcome your family to schedule an appointment with us! We provide quality pediatric dental care to those you love the most.

Should I stop breastfeeding when my child develops teeth? The short answer is not if you don’t want to. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for the first year of a baby’s life while the World Health Organization encourages two years. One of the benefits of breastfeeding is reduced risk of baby bottle tooth decay. However, breastfed babies can still get cavities so it's important to begin wiping your baby’s gums with a clean gauze or washcloth everyday starting a few days after birth. Have questions about your baby’s dental care? Contact us at – it’s never too early to begin a oral care routine!

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months. We support continued breastfeeding after solid foods are introduced as long as you and your baby desire, for 2 years or beyond.

Did you know that you could overproduce saliva? Ptyalism, as the condition is known, is commonly seen in pregnant women. Saliva is beneficial to our oral health as it contains enzymes, calcium, and antibacterial agents that help us fight off tooth decay and gum disease. While we don’t know the exact cause of it, it's suspected to be due to hormonal changes. The good news is that although it may be irritating, it isn’t harmful! Don’t forget to let us know if you’re pregnant at your appointment with us. Call us to inform us of any changes in your health.

Saliva is vital to our oral health, but what happens when we have too much of it? Learn more about Ptyalism, when it occurs, and how to treat it.
