hi y’all, Michelle here!! I’m a current D1 at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine 🦷🤍

it’s officially been one month of dental school, crazy i know! here are a few things i learned over the past month that i hope will benefit you guys 🤭

✨ befriend your classmates!they’re YOUR people and you’ll be going through the next 4 years together *cue hsm “we’re all in this together* 🫶🏻

✨ do not compare! everyone has their own strengths. work at your own pace and i promise you will get to where you need to be in no time. you made it to dental school, so trust that you have it in you to succeed!

✨ ask faculty, peers, and upperclassmen for help! i know it can be very daunting, but you’re here to learn - do it for your future patients!

most importantly, have fun, explore things outside of school, and enjoy the journey - it’ll fly by with just a blink of an eye ✨

if you have any questions or want to connect, my dms are always open!! 🤍

Hey I’m Jayden! I’m going into my second year of the DDS program at the University of Toronto!

My biggest piece of advice to Pre-Dental students… is to ask as many questions and make as many connections as you can! Dental students and your local dentists have already gone through the process and can tell you so much about the profession, applications, dental school and tips!

Hi! My name is Chloe Davidson I am a first-year dental student at Roseman University School of Dental Medicine. My path to dental school was challenging to say the least. Being a dentist has always been a dream of mine! This first year has taught me so much and brought me some of my best friends! My takeaway during my experience so far is to take it one day at a time and to not let setbacks or options of others discourage you but instead to use them to motivate you to become a better you. Take criticism, take risks, and be confident.

Hi! My name is Giselle Fernandez and I’m a D1 at UCLA School of Dentistry! I went to California Lutheran University for undergrad. A few pieces of advice for incoming D1s would be to become friends with everyone, especially upperclassmen because they have been through it before and they can offer amazing advice that you don’t really learn from the lectures. When starting to drill for the first time in sim lab, don’t be so hard on yourself and really try to understand where you went wrong and how you can prevent it the next time. It’s okay to mess up, but always treat it as a lesson to learn from.

My next advice when it comes to didactics is to always make a study guide for every lecture you covered that day so that you don’t fall behind. That way when the midterm or final comes around, you already have gone through it once and can review all the study guides you’ve made. Try to figure out what study method works best for you early on and stick with it. Lastly, try to get as much practice drilling as you can during your first year and develop strong hand skills because when second year rolls around, you’ll have less free time to go into the lab after hours.

Feel free to DM me and if you have any other questions about UCLA School of Dentistry or dental school in general! Good luck to those applying this cycle! 🦷🤍

Hello there,

My name is Randy Vu! I am currently a D2 at Texas A&M College of Dentistry. I will officially be a D3 and transition to patient care in a few weeks! Here are some things I have learned for those applying or simply curious:

a. Give yourself some credit ~ I cannot imagine how hard it must have been getting to this point. But here you are - you have made it. That deserves a celebration!

b. Do not be passive, be proactive ~ Whether it is dentistry or other personal passions and endeavors, go out there and chase it. Set yourself up for success! Go out there and be proactive, and opportunities will present themselves.

As a non-traditional student, getting to this point was difficult. I understand that perspective too. Embrace the challenge ~ if I can do it, you definitely can too! Do not hesitate to reach out for advice, good luck!

It’s easy to get caught up in the stress of the day to day life in dental school. But just as important is to keep in mind some of our most fond memories are made here. Learning dentistry alongside genuine people result in lifelong memories. So let’s live in the moment and not get caught in the small things that bring us down!

Hi! My name is Mariah and I’m a D1 at Roseman CODM.

I became a hygienist, got married, and had kids before I decided to pursue my dream to become a dentist. It’s felt like such a long journey to get to where I am now. One of my favorite quotes, that I’ve reminded myself of time and again, is by Earl Nightingale: “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”
Your path to dental school may not be straightforward. If you’re a nontraditional student, I’m out here rooting for you.

“A delay is not a denial. It is only a sign that you need to have patience and trust that in time what you want will come to you.”

My name is Kejdra Williams! I am a 1st year dental student at the University of Washington School of Dentistry (UWSOD). My road to dental school was not a straight one. It was full of twist & turns, peaks & valleys, many rejections and one ACCEPTANCE!! I am fortunate to be a NHSC scholar, where upon graduation I will provide trustworthy and quality care to underserved populations. As class Vice President I advocate for my class to ensure our time in school is successful. Most importantly, I help to promote, aid and support the academic and social environment of minority students at UWSOD as President of the Student National Dental Association (SNDA).

I am looking forward to leaving a legacy that myself, family, and community will be proud of!

Hello everybody! My name is Caroline Cantú and I’m a D1 at UCLA School of Dentistry! I’m from Washington and graduated from Washington State University! I’m so excited to bring to you all some orientation day/week tips for those counting down the days like I did!

•First, get to know everyone!!! This was my absolute favorite part of orientation! So many new faces with unique backgrounds. Be kind and acquaint yourself with the amazing intelligent people you’re going to spend the next 4 years with! I love my class!

•Second, bring a folder and tote bag because you will get plenty of important docs whether it be about financial aid, tuition, additional fees or free stuff🤩

•Third, bring a snack and maybe some caffeine because it’s likely you will hear several presentations and you don’t want to miss any of it!

•Next, bring your organization skills, as first year also comes with the purchase of your dental kit that you have to organize in your locker (shown above) I’d compare it to a real-life game of Tetris.. literally😂

•Last but not least, don’t pass up on any social activities with your class! Lectures are going to come fast so utilize this time to have fun with your classmates and upperclassmen✨

That’s all I have for orientation tips! Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have!
