BPA—Bisphenol A—is a chemical used in the production of certain polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), BPA can leach from some food-contact materials into food and beverages, with diet being a major source of human exposure.

Why are researchers paying attention? BPA is widely studied as an endocrine-disrupting chemical, meaning it can interfere with normal hormone activity.
