While it feels natural to rinse, you should actually just spit out the excess toothpaste and avoid rinsing with water (or mouthwash) right away.
Why? Rinsing washes away the concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste before it has time to sit on your teeth and work its magic to strengthen your enamel and prevent cavities! Try waiting at least 20–30 minutes before reaching for that glass of water.
