Wanting some dental tips for the new year?

1. Replace your old toothbrush 🪥
The American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes, or heads, every 3 months. Plus, what’s a better way to start the New Year than with a new toothbrush? Dr. P recommends the Philips Sonicare 4700 and the Oral-B Pro 1000 to get the best brush for your buck!

2. Keep some floss handy in the car 🦷
It’s important to make sure the food you eat doesn’t get stuck between your teeth and cause decay. Keeping some extra floss in your car will increase the likelihood of you reaching for it after an afternoon brunch with friends or an evening dinner date! Dr. P‘s favorites are Coco floss and Listerine Ultraclean Dental Floss.

3. Take a full 2 minutes to brush ⏲
Brushing for a full two minutes will ensure the removal of any food or plaque that has remained on your teeth since the last brushing. Studies show that people who brush for one minute remove 27% of plaque only. Imagine what 2 mins could do for you!

CLD Pro tip: Play your favorite song for 2 minutes while you brush your teeth or set a timer on your phone!

4. Cut down on liquid sugars🧃
When liquid sugar is consumed, it coats the teeth and gums. Acid is then created when the sugar mixes with the natural bacteria found in saliva. This acid will slowly breakdown your tooth enamel if left unattended. Liquid sugars are probably the single biggest reason for dental decay.

CLD Pro Tip: Swish and rinse your mouth with water right after drinking something sugary. This can neutralize the pH in your mouth and start the cycle of rebuilding the enamel the sugary drink has broken down. Also, if you are going to drink a sugary drink, please drink it fast. The longer you take to drink it the more destructive it is.

5. Schedule your 6 month exam 📞
Dentists are able to spot early signs of tooth decay and gum disease. When you visit every 6 months, it’s easier to catch dental problems early on before they become costly and painful to resolve.

5 Ways to Protect Your Smile During The Holidays

1. Maintain your oral care routine
We know the holidays can be a busy time, however it’s important to maintain your normal oral care routine as much as possible! Try and avoid going to bed without brushing your teeth, no matter how tired you are!

2. Avoid grazing/ constant snacking
The steady intake of food throughout the day fuels the bacteria in your mouth and can put your teeth at greater risk for decay. If you do plan on snacking, brush or rinse you teeth with water afterwards!

3. Eat cheese when drinking alcohol
The pH balancing effects found in cheese will help neutralize the acid that’s in alcoholic beverages. Plus, the calcium in the cheese will help keep your teeth and bones strong!

4. Don’t use your teeth as a tool
We know there are packages to open, tape to cut, and things to tear but your teeth are not a tool! Ripping a package or opening a stubborn bottle cap with your teeth can cause chips and breaks. Keep a pair of scissors nearby to avoid an emergency trip to the dentist this year!

5. Beware of hard caramel or toffees
Because it’s sugar that sticks to and coats the teeth, caramel can stay on the teeth longer than other foods. This will wear away tooth enamel and increase the risk of dental decay.

“My family has been seeing Dr. P and her staff for many years and it has always been a wonderful experience. She and her staff always manage to make us feel comfortable and like part of the family by balancing professionalism with fun and humor. No small feat for a dentist office but they do it so naturally and with such ease.

She focuses on not just your dental health but encompasses the importance of overall health (physical, mental and a less talked about part of health - your sleep) and how all of this plays into your dental health. She takes a wholistic approach in how she cares for her patients and is able to personalize your dental care to encourage the best possible outcome for you. She and her staff are very knowledgeable about not just caring for your mouth but caring for yourself and offer suggestions, recommendations and resources to help encourage your dental health.

If you are in the market for a caring, professional and knowledgeable dentist and staff, I strongly encourage you to stop by Cypress Lakes Dental to see Dr. P and her staff.”

We have a small challenge for you! Take 5 seconds of your day to pause and ask yourself these 2 things:

1. "Is my mouth open when I'm in a relaxed state?"
2. "Am I breathing from my mouth when I'm in this
relaxed state?"

If you answered yes to both of these questions, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your dental team and dive deeper into the root cause! The more proactive approach you take towards your breathing, the faster you will reap its benefits.

Let us know in the comments what you discover about yourself from asking these two questions!
