COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A plethora of mental health issues plague our society today and the dental community is not immune. Dental professionals encounter multiple stressors in the workplace which may result in significant anxiety, depression, and other emotional outcomes. A large proportion of our patients also suffer with mental health issues which in turn affect their oral health. Evidence concerning mental health nationwide and how patients and dental professionals are affected will be presented in this course, along with signs and symptoms of the most common conditions. Management and treatment strategies will be discussed, including evidence concerning su***de and approaches for su***de prevention. The session will emphasize the ethical responsibility of all health care providers to address mental health issues; the knowledge obtained can be utilized in personal as well as patient care for achieving whole body health.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to:

1. Define key mental health conditions affecting dental professionals and patients

2. Describe management strategies for mental health conditions and su***de prevention

3. Explain how mental health conditions affect oral health

4. Recognize the responsibility of all health care providers in mental health awareness

Jennifer Hirsch Doobrow, DMD, FACD, FICDBEYOND THE PROCEDURE: TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH PERIODONTAL AND IMPLANT CARE

Dr. Jennifer Hirsch Doobrow is a Board-Certified Periodontist and the Owner and CEO of Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc., located in Cullman, Alabama. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2007 and completed her specialty certification in Periodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2010.

She currently serves as Immediate Past-President of the Alabama Dental Association (ALDA) and is a Trustee for the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Doobrow is also the Past President of both the Southern Academy of Periodontology and the Alabama Society of Periodontists. In addition, she serves as Chair of WISE (Women in Implantology Supporting and Empowering), is a faculty member for the Pikos Institute, serves on the Executive Advisory Board for the Seattle Study Club, represents her district on the UAB Alumni Executive Council, sits on the Executive Committee of the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons, and serves on the ADA Governance and Organization Health Evaluation Advisory Task Force. She also leads a Seattle Study Club in Cullman, Alabama, where she guides continuing education efforts for dental professionals.
