A lot of people stay away because they're embarrassed about how long it's been, or anxious about what we might find. I understand that completely.

If you've been told you need gum surgery and the thought made you want to run, I understand completely.

That used to mean cutting the gums open, stitches, a long recovery.

Now I use the Solea laser, and it changes almost everything about that process. The laser goes in first and kills the bacteria hiding in the pocket, no scalpel involved.

My hygienist comes in next and clears the tartar out from underneath the gums. Then I come back in with the laser a second time to fully decontaminate the area. We've seen gum pocketing reduced by as much as 50% with this approach. Less trauma to the tissue means healing happens faster and with less discomfort. No stitches, no long recovery, no dread.

These are fair questions, so here's exactly how IV sedation works.

You come in, you get a small poke in the arm to make you sleepy, then we start an IV and you drift off. The whole procedure happens while you sleep, and most patients are already home resting before they come fully round.

You are never alone in that room. At least two of us are with you the entire time, between the assistant, the anesthesiologist, and me.

People often mix this up: nitrous keeps you relaxed but awake, while the IV is what sends you fully to sleep. If you'd rather be completely asleep for the whole thing, that choice is yours.

My exams usually run 30 to 35 minutes, and that's on purpose.

That time lets me get to know you. Where you're from. What's going on in your life. What you're hoping to fix. I remember those details, and patients are always a little surprised when I bring them up at the next visit.

It also lets me look closely and catch small problems while they're still small.

For me, good dentistry comes from taking the time to do it right and knowing the person in the chair as well as the teeth.

When your wisdom teeth need to come out, my goal is for you to remember almost nothing about the day.

That's why I recommend IV sedation, especially when the teeth are impacted. A little medication makes you sleepy, an IV takes you the rest of the way, and you sleep right through the procedure. Most patients wake up at home, already on the mend.

Laughing gas works well when you just need the edge taken off, though it keeps you awake. For a bigger extraction, true sleep sedation gives you a far calmer experience.

We block off the whole appointment for you, so nobody is rushing, and you're looked after from the first moment to the last.
