Parents tell me their kid is finally restful. Calmer in the mornings. Less reactive at school.

I can't promise those outcomes for every family. What I can tell you is that when the breathing changes, a lot of other things tend to change with it.

Worth ruling out the airway before accepting any other label.

A tired child and an inattentive child can look like the exact same kid.

That's the part of the conversation that rarely happens at an ADHD evaluation. We assess behavior in a chair under fluorescent lights, and we don't ask the one question that changes everything: how is this child sleeping?

When the airway is compromised at night, the brain spends the entire sleep cycle fighting to breathe instead of doing the work sleep is supposed to do. Memory consolidation, emotional regulation, focus restoration, all of it gets interrupted. Hundreds of times a night.

The behavior you see during the day is real. The cause might not be what you've been told.

If any of this sounded like your kid, tell me what you're noticing below.

The research has been there for over a decade.

Kids with restricted airways have fragmented sleep. Fragmented sleep produces symptoms that overlap heavily with ADHD.

Sometimes it's ADHD. Sometimes it isn't. The only way to know is to rule out the airway first.

Night guards protect your teeth. They do not stop the grinding.
Because grinding isn't a bad habit. It's usually your body trying to reopen a collapsing airway so you can keep breathing at night.

So basically when we fix the airway we fix the grinding.

Wearing one right now? Drop a 😬 below and let's talk about it.

You have been doing what your dentist told you to do: You wear the night guard, you take the ibuprofen, you go to physical therapy, and you ✨try✨ your best to manage the stress.

BUT every single morning you wake up with the same tight jaw, the same headache behind your eyes, the same exhaustion that no amount of sleep seems to fix.

You have been told this is just how it is, that grinding is a stress response, and that the night guard is the best you can do.

It is not.

Here is what nobody has explained to you yet: Your jaw is not grinding randomly- it is compensating. When your airway partially collapses during sleep, your brain triggers your jaw to move forward to reopen it. Your muscles tense, then your teeth clench, and finally your body fights to keep you breathing all night long.

The night guard protects your teeth from the damage, but it does absolutely nothing to stop the airway collapse causing it. And in some cases it actually makes the underlying problem worse by repositioning your jaw in a way that further restricts your airway.

This is why the headaches keep coming back. This is why the grinding never stops. This is why you have replaced three night guards and feel exactly the same.

The root cause has never been addressed.

At Bushdid Smiles we start with a comprehensive 1.5 hour evaluation, not a 10 minute appointment. We look at your airway, your bite, your jaw position, and and we use saliva testing to identify certain bacteria that are directly linked to reduced nitric oxide production and airway.

Then we treat what is actually there.

If you have been managing symptoms for years and never gotten real answers, you deserve a second opinion.

We’ve been taught that “killing bacteria” = clean.

But your mouth isn’t supposed to be sterile. It’s a living ecosystem.
And when you wipe everything out daily, your body has to work harder to rebuild what it actually needs to function.

This is where functional dentistry flips the script:
It’s not about destroying bacteria… it’s about supporting the right ones.
Small shifts in your routine can change way more than just your breath.
