Understanding Tongue & Lip Ties

Tongue and lip ties are being diagnosed more frequently these days. While both are part of normal oral anatomy, in some babies they can contribute to pain during feeding, difficulty latching, or inefficient feeding.

When a baby doesn’t have a proper latch, they may take in more air, which can contribute to gassiness, fussiness, and what parents often describe as a “colicky” baby.

Not every tongue or lip tie needs to be released. An individualized evaluation by a pediatric dentist can help determine whether a tie may be affecting your baby’s feeding and what next steps, if any, are appropriate.

The impact of oral ties can extend beyond breastfeeding or bottle feeding. In some children, oral function may also relate to eating, oral motor development, airway and breathing, and speech.

A team approach can make all the difference. Working closely with lactation consultants, pediatric OTs, and pediatric dentists can help identify feeding challenges and support your baby in thriving.

If you have questions about a possible tongue or lip tie, call our office to schedule a consultation. We’re here to help you understand your options and lead you in the right direction.

The best day is seeing your child in our dental chair! 🦷💙

Seeing your little one every 6 months gives us the opportunity to watch them grow, get to know their unique personalities, and make sure their smile is developing just the way it should.

At each visit, we’re checking for:
🦷 Cavities and signs of tooth decay
👄 Whether there is enough room for their growing teeth
🌬️ Their airway and breathing patterns
📈 How their teeth, jaws, and overall oral health are developing

If they don’t have any cavities, AMAZING! 🎉 We celebrate right alongside you!

And if we do find a cavity, no worries. We’re here to help get them back to a healthy smile and guide you with tips and tools to help prevent cavities from happening again.

Every child is different, and that’s what makes our job so special. We truly love meeting each and every one of them and being part of their journey as they grow into happy, healthy smiles. 🥰

See you in 6 months at Linda A. Steele, DDS, Pediatric Dentistry! 😀

What an incredible way to celebrate the 4th of July! 🇺🇸 We had so much fun participating in the Coppell Parade and celebrating America’s 250th anniversary alongside such an amazing community.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing so many familiar faces, our wonderful patients and their families, cheering along the parade route. Your smiles and support made the day even more special!

Thank you, Coppell, for making this celebration one to remember. We loved being part of such a meaningful event and look forward to welcoming even more families into our pediatric dental office in the future. We can’t wait to help your little ones smile for years to come!
