After a deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planing), your mouth is being treated for gum disease which is called periodontitis.

A regular cleaning (prophy)is meant for patients with healthy gums. But once gum disease is diagnosed, your oral health needs a different level of care to keep things stable.

Periodontal maintenance is recommended because:
• Gum disease is a chronic condition. It doesn’t just go away after one treatment
• Harmful bacteria can return below the gums without ongoing care
• These cleanings focus on deeper areas and preventing further bone loss
• They are typically needed every 3–4 months, instead of every 6 months

Think of it like this:
A deep cleaning is the treatment, and periodontal maintenance is the ongoing care that helps prevent the disease from progressing.

Skipping these visits can allow the infection to return, which may lead to tooth loss or more extensive treatment down the road.

Our goal is to keep your smile healthy, stable, and comfortable long-term!
