A missing back tooth is easy to ignore since nobody sees it when you smile. The rest of your mouth notices, though.

Over time, the teeth next to the gap can drift and tilt, and the jawbone where the tooth used to be slowly shrinks. A dental implant replaces the root as well as the crown, which helps preserve that bone and keeps the neighboring teeth where they belong.

If someone in your house recently had a tooth pulled or wisdom teeth removed, the candy bowl is going to be a real test this month.

Caramels, taffy, and other sticky candy can pull at stitches, and hard candy or popcorn can leave small pieces in a healing socket. Soft chocolate is a safer pick for the first couple of weeks, followed by a gentle rinse like the one on your aftercare sheet.

If something does not feel right after a treat, like new pain a few days after surgery or a bad taste that will not go away, call the office so we can take a look.

Most dental insurance plans reset on January 1st, and benefits left unused at the end of the year do not roll over. The same goes for many flexible spending accounts.

If Dr. Williams has already recommended a procedure, the next couple of months are a good window to get it done while this year's coverage still applies. Our office can check what your plan covers and give you an estimate before anything goes on the calendar.

Fall sports season is here, and the mouthguard that actually protects your athlete is the one that fits well enough that they keep it in. A guard sitting at the bottom of a gym bag is not doing much.

A good share of the sports injuries we treat involve a tooth, the jaw, or both, and a properly fitted guard prevents a lot of them. If your athlete wore one last season, it is worth checking that it still fits after a summer of growth.

If something does happen on the field, call us right away instead of waiting it out. We keep time open for emergencies, and having our number saved is one less thing to sort out from the sideline.

Patients often want to know what oral surgery is actually going to feel like, and the answer depends a lot on which option you choose.

Local anesthesia keeps you awake and numb. Nitrous oxide takes the edge off while you stay aware of what is happening. IV sedation means most patients remember very little of the appointment at all. Dr. Williams goes over which ones make sense for your procedure and how you feel about being in the chair.

Wisdom teeth tend to cause trouble at the worst possible time, like finals week or the middle of a season. Most of the time there is plenty of warning before that happens.

An X-ray shows where the teeth are sitting and whether they have room to come in, and that is what Dr. Williams uses to decide whether to treat them now or keep an eye on them for a while.

Taking a morning off work or pulling a teenager out of school is a lot to ask for a visit that is mostly a conversation about an X-ray and a plan.

This fall we are adding virtual consults for cases where an in-person exam is not needed up front. Dr. Williams can review your records, walk through what he is seeing, and answer questions before you ever come in.

We have been quietly working on something on the north side of town, and it is far enough along that we can finally talk about it. Our new Upper Arlington office opened September 2nd.

The space was built around how a visit actually goes, from the consultation room to recovery, and it gives us more room on the schedule for both planned procedures and emergencies.

If your insurance plan or FSA resets at the end of the year, the second half of summer is a good time to check what you have left. Benefits that go unused don't roll over, and a lot of patients don't realize how much they've paid into a plan until it's already gone.

This applies to consultations, extractions, implants, and any planned procedures Dr. Williams may have discussed with you at a past visit.
