Galen is not just a housing assignment, it’s the first step toward becoming the healthcare professional you want to be! 👩🏼‍⚕️ Kelly, a nursing major and previous Galen Health Fellow, spent the summer in the emergency department at MidState Medical Center. Another Galen student doing great things—we love to see it!

Here are a few from from Kelly, reflecting on the experience: “Working alongside an incredible team of nurses, providers, technicians, and support staff at Hartford HealthCare has been an invaluable experience. The fast-paced environment of the ED challenged me to think critically, communicate effectively, and provide compassionate care during some of patients’ most vulnerable moments.

This fellowship gave me opportunities that extended beyond the bedside. From participating in quality improvement initiatives and presenting research on hand hygiene compliance and healthcare-associated infections, to gaining hands-on clinical experience. This has strengthened my confidence as I continue in my nursing career.

Galen has prepared me for this experience by providing me with core values that can be used in the real world. The most important one is critical communication. Being able to communicate with all of the staff was important for my patients safety as well as my own.”
