What's the Best Age for Braces?

Although anyone with all of their natural, permanent teeth is likely a great candidate for braces, the opportune time to get braces is between the ages of 9 and 14. The older the patient, the more difficult it is for their jaws and teeth to adjust to treatment. However, many adults get braces and achieve incredible results. Are you a candidate for orthodontics? Braces and clear aligners are for children, teens, and men and women of all ages. If you have crooked teeth, gapped teeth, a crossbite, open bite, overbite, overjet, or overbite you are likely a candidate for orthodontic treatment. However, gum disease can complicate treatment because braces can increase the risk of gum disease. Before undergoing orthodontic treatment, work with your dentist or a periodontist to reverse or stabilize the disease.

How do Braces Help With Digestion?

Braces offer numerous benefits to patients who have crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth. One that you don’t hear about often is that braces can aid in digestive health. Since the main purpose of teeth is to chew food, misaligned teeth can inhibit this process and cause you to swallow larger chunks of food. This makes digesting the food more difficult for your stomach. Get braces, achieve perfectly aligned teeth, and experience better digestive health!

Do I Have to Go to An Orthodontist for Braces?

Do you have to go to an orthodontist for braces? In short, no. Dentists also provide orthodontic treatment. The longer answer is that dentists often have the knowledge to provide braces by completing seminars and other continuing education courses. However, orthodontists often have a higher skill level because they have completed rigorous training, examinations, and testing to ensure they have mastered the art of orthodontics. Be sure to interview a dentist and orthodontist before making your final decision.

How An Underbite Affects Oral Health

When lower teeth extend beyond upper teeth, we call the condition an underbite. Significant underbites are visually obvious, but a mild underbite may only be detected by a dentist or orthodontist. Though the condition is not considered dangerous, it can cause some nagging problems. People with an underbite may experience: chewing and speech issues, jaw pain, chronic bad breath, mouth breathing, TMJ disorders, and sleep apnea. If you have an underbite, our team may recommend orthodontic therapy or surgery.

What Are Palate Expanders?

An important part of orthodontic therapy for some patients, palate (or palatal) expanders widen the upper oral palate (maxilla). This treatment is most effective in patients between ages 5 and 16, though in specific cases, adults can benefit. Treatment takes six months to one year, on average. Expanders adjust incrementally to guide bone expansion of the upper palate, to make room for the proper alignment of teeth. Expanders also help treat bite issues, including open bite and crossbite.

Tips for Invisalign Patients

So you’re wearing Invisalign? Awesome! Your beautiful smile is coming soon! In the meantime, these three tips will help. (1) Never eat with your aligners in. Foods will stain the acrylic, so only drink water while wearing your aligners. (2) Wear your aligners at least 22 hours each day, throughout treatment, to stay on track with the treatment timeline. (3) Practice great oral homecare, brushing twice and flossing once daily–and washing your Invisalign aligners with gentle detergent and water.

When is Early Orthodontic Intervention Necessary?

When a child is seven years of age, his or her teeth and jaws are sufficiently developed for our orthodontist to determine whether first-phase orthodontic therapy is necessary. First-phase orthodontics prepares the mouth to accommodate incoming permanent teeth. First-phase orthodontics can include braces, spacers, and/or expanders. First-phase treatment makes the second phase easier and in some cases, shorter. Second-phase orthodontics may be advised to properly align permanent teeth, after they have developed.

When Should Your Child Begin Flossing?

Parents should begin flossing between their child’s teeth when the child’s teeth fit closely together, usually between the ages of two and six. Starting early helps children become more comfortable with the practice, and it helps them avoid pain associated with cavities and gum disease. Children are typically ready to floss on their own when they are in the second or third grade, but parents should observe to ensure their child is getting between all of their teeth properly.

How Crooked Teeth Can Lead to Periodontal Disease

Your smile’s appearance isn’t the only thing affected by your crooked, crowded, or misaligned teeth. These malocclusions can also make it difficult to clean all sides of your teeth and keep them free from plaque and tartar. As a result, you may develop periodontal disease, an infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Talk to our experienced dental team today about how braces or Invisalign can help you achieve a healthier smile.
