Pregnancy reshapes everything. Pregnancy reshapes breathing.

- [ ] Hormones- like estrogen- increase blood volume and tissues swell.
- [ ] Soft passages of the airway get bigger and narrow the airway.
- [ ] The uterus can push up on the diaphragm.
- [ ] Healthy weight gain adds volume to the neck.

These factors can impact the integrity or patency of the airway and make it more susceptible to collapse.

Why does this matter?

Airway collapses ➡️oxygen levels dip ➡️ adrenaline surges ➡️ blood vessels tighten and heart rate goes up

This is a stress response. And when this stress response happens night over night the blood pressure stays elevated and increases the risk for pre-eclampsia.

Pre-eclampsia is a large risk factor for preterm birth.

It’s common for women who have never snored before to now, during pregnancy, be snoring, mouth breathing, clenching and grinding their teeth, and not feeling rested.

The structures of the head and neck and jaws can make some mothers more susceptible to sleep and airway issues.
That’s where we can help.
Identifying structures and function is important to identifying risk and finding solutions.

“They will grow out of it!”

Or will they?
Our children don’t grow OUT of their structural problems or dysfunctional patterns, they often grow INTO them.

Kids are really good at compensating for structures and function that aren’t ideal. And those compensations mask things- for a while. Compensations that work for NOW are probably changing the way they grow and reinforcing poor functional patterns.

- [ ] Chronic nasal congestion (the always “snotty” or “sick kid”? They may start to open their mouth to breathe.

- [ ] Mouth breathing? Contributes to poor tongue and facial tone, cavities, gum disease and reflux

- [ ] Poor tongue tone/posture? Can play a role in poor swallow patterns, tongue thrusting and narrow upper jaw growth

- [ ] Narrow upper jaw/high palate? Now there is less room in the nasal passages for air to flow leading to a more collapsible airway.

- [ ] Collapsing Airway? Leads to teeth grinding, snoring and fragmented/interrupted sleep.

- [ ] Teeth Grinding? A compensation to try to keep the airway open.

- [ ] Fragmented/disrupted sleep? Often shows up as behavior issues or academic struggles, bed wetting, and hyperactivity or a kid that is always tired.

As we get older- we compensate less and we compensate less successfully. This is what leads us to be adults who say:

✔️“I can’t breathe through my nose. I’m always congested”
✔️“I’m always tired”
✔️“My partner says I snore”
✔️“I have pain in my jaw and wake up with headaches”
✔️“My gums bleed”
✔️“I feel like I always have new cavities”
✔️“My teeth are sensitive and chipping”
✔️“I have sleep apnea”

When we identify, address and correct the growth pattern and the soft tissue and muscle dysfunction- we can set kids up to be so much less likely to have these adult struggles.

Not every kid presents the same or needs the same interventions.

But every kid- and every parent- deserves to be evaluated beyond the teeth by a dentist that wants them to thrive and understands these connections!

Our goal has always been a HEALTHY MOUTH in a HEALTHY PERSON!

Your mouth is home to your oral microbiome.

The oral microbiome is billions of bacteria and fungi- some cause inflammation, some cause bad breath, and some help keep us healthy!

We offer Bristle Oral Health Testing to our patients as a way to identify personalized and detailed information about your oral health.

This testing can help patients address:
- [ ] Inflamed Gums
- [ ] Tooth Decay
- [ ] Gut Issues
- [ ] Bad Breath
- [ ] Oral Fungi
- [ ] Burning Mouth
- [ ] Airway Issues
- [ ] Systemic Conditions and Inflammation

With this information we are able to be more precise and personalize our recommendations for each patient based on their specific biologic realities and needs.

The mouth talks to the whole body. We can’t ignore it.

We love to see spaces between your child’s baby teeth!

Spacing in the primary dentition is preferable because it means there is more likely to be enough space for the complete and healthy eruption of the permanent teeth.

The permanent teeth are larger than the baby teeth and will take up more space- so they simply need more room!

Crowding or lack of space between baby teeth is one possible clue telling us that there may be a need to intervene early to ensure that your child’s mouth and jaws are growing appropriately!

By helping this patient understand that the way he was breathing wasn’t optimal he was empowered to be aware and tuned into his body in a way that he hadn’t been before.

Nasal breathing won’t reverse hypertension for everyone.

But it is the way we are supposed to breathe- and so many of us don’t or can’t breathe through our noses. Figuring out why can have major systemic and oral health benefits.

THIS IS WHY we ask questions about our patients and their health histories.

We know we aren’t your physician, but the mouth is part of the body.

And we see signs and risk factors for systemic, airway, breathing and sleep issues every day in our practice:

- [ ] Bleeding gums
- [ ] Cavities
- [ ] TMJ pain
- [ ] Migraines
- [ ] Narrow upper jaws
- [ ] Evidence of tooth wear from grinding and clenching
- [ ] Enlarged tonsils and adenoids
- [ ] Poor tongue position
- [ ] Poor muscle tone in the face/tongue
- [ ] Dysfunctional swallow patterns

We aren’t asking the questions to be nosy. And the answers just may give us the insight we need to show you something about yourself that you’ve never seen or been shown before.

The way we breathe impacts the way we grow and the way we grow impacts the way we breathe.

The mouth and the teeth can be a gateway to identifying many complex whole body issues that contribute to many of these patient concerns.

If you or your child are struggling with one or more of these symptoms, you are not alone.

But common does not mean normal or healthy.

We are committed to looking beyond the teeth and helping you and your family get to the root cause of so many of these struggles.
