If you can hear your child grinding their teeth from the NEXT ROOM…this one’s for you.

That crunch… grind… crunch can sound a little terrifying, but here’s the good news: teeth grinding (bruxism) is actually pretty common in kids.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD):
✨ About 1 in 4 children experience probable or possible sleep bruxism
✨ It’s most common during childhood and tends to decrease with age
✨ Grinding does NOT automatically mean your child needs a night guard

So what are we looking for?
We pay closer attention when grinding is associated with things like significant tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches, muscle tenderness, difficulty opening, or other concerning symptoms.

And while bruxism can occur alongside things like snoring and sleep-related breathing disorders, that doesn’t mean grinding automatically = sleep apnea.

Bottom line: Your tiny nighttime garbage disposal might sound alarming, but sometimes the best treatment is simply keeping an eye on things.

Mention it at your child’s next dental visit so we can take a look!
