This month, we had the incredible joy of celebrating Laci and Leland’s baptisms. What makes this moment even more special is the story behind it. Both Laci and Leland were saved as children, but their baptisms came at different points in their lives. Laci has always wanted to be baptized, but struggled to find the courage to take that step. Then came Leland, at 15 years old, boldly stepping forward in his faith and choosing to be baptized. His courage inspired Laci to finally take the step she had wanted to take for so long. What a beautiful reminder that God can use our faith and our courage to encourage someone else, even within our own family. Watching a family publicly proclaim their faith together was such a special and unforgettable moment. We are so incredibly proud of both of them and excited to see how God continues to lead them in the days ahead.

We enjoyed our visit to Clinton Rotary Club this week to hear our friend Rebecca speak. We knew she was an amazingly talented person but now we know she’s also an amazingly talented public speaker! What an incredible story.

🌎 This week at Clinton Rotary Club, we traveled to Pakistan without ever leaving Clinton!

Our guest speaker was Rebecca Kemp Brent, PhD. Rebecca is a recently retired freelance designer, editor, writer, and educator whose career has centered around sewing, quilting, textiles, and needlework. Beginning her career in the 1970s, she has worked in theatrical costuming, apparel manufacturing, hand needlework, and sewing education.

She became a pioneer in educating people about computerized home embroidery machines and has worked with international companies, publishers, and designers throughout her career. Her work has appeared in numerous sewing and quilting publications, and she has been featured on PBS programs including It’s Sew Easy and Fresh Quilting, as well as The Quilt Show.

Rebecca is also the author of four books and holds a BS in Clothing and Textile Design and a PhD in Textiles and Clothing and Educational Curriculum and Instruction.

On Tuesday, Rebecca shared fascinating reminiscences from a Rotary Group Study Exchange trip to Pakistan 35 years ago. What began with an unexpected phone call asking, “Would you be interested in going to Pakistan, all expenses paid?” became an unforgettable journey filled with culture, history, adventure, and lifelong friendships.

We heard about bustling Karachi, historic Lahore, the Khyber Pass, Pakistani arts and crafts, textiles, food, architecture, and even the unforgettable traffic! But the most meaningful part of the presentation wasn’t the places she visited; it was the people she met along the way.

Through Rotary’s Group Study Exchange, she was welcomed into the homes of Pakistani families and experienced their lives and traditions firsthand. Decades later, she is still in touch with some of those families, demonstrating how a Rotary exchange can create friendships and connections that last a lifetime.

One of her biggest takeaways was a wonderful reminder for all of us: when opportunities arise to travel, host, serve, or connect with people from different backgrounds, seize them. The personal connections we make may become the greatest gifts we take with us.

As she beautifully paraphrased Ernest Hemingway at the end of her presentation: “Wherever you go, for the rest of your life, it stays with you; for Paris ( or Pakistan), is a moveable feast.”

Our President Amanda learned about Rebecca’s connection with Rotary during an appointment at Butch Oaks Family Dentistry so naturally Dr. Oaks and Dr. Sawyers joined us as guests to hear Rebecca tell her story.
