If you’ve ever stood in the toothpaste aisle wondering which one to buy, you’re not alone. 🦷

The truth is there isn’t one best toothpaste.The best toothpaste for sensitive teeth is different from the best toothpaste for cavities, gum disease, dry mouth, or kids.

I reviewed some of the internet’s favorite toothpastes and gave my honest take on who should use them, when to use them, and where I think they fall short.

And yes... one of my opinions has changed over the years. 👀

Things I will not buy as a 42-year-old dentist who loves her teeth :

1️⃣ Over-the-counter nightguards
They are not customized to your bite and can create uneven pressure on your teeth over time. That can lead to wear, sensitivity, and even shifting.

2️⃣ Oil pulling instead of brushing and flossing
You can swish oil all you want but if you are not brushing and flossing the plaque is still sitting there.

3️⃣ Whitening toothpaste to actually whiten teeth
They can remove surface stains but they do not change the true color of your teeth. Real whitening requires peroxide to work below the surface.

4️⃣ Teflon-coated or heavily waxed floss
Some contain PFAS and the slick coating can make it harder to actually grab plaque between your teeth.

5️⃣ Skipping cleanings because nothing hurts
Dental problems do not start with pain. They start silently and build over time.

6️⃣ Toothpastes without a true remineralizing ingredient
If it is not helping strengthen enamel with fluoride or nano-hydroxyapatite, it is not doing much for cavity prevention.

7️⃣ Battery operated toothbrushes
They do not deliver the consistent power or motion needed to effectively remove plaque and often miss the gumline where disease starts.

8️⃣ Purple color-correcting whiteners
They temporarily cancel yellow tones but they do not actually
whiten your teeth.

9️⃣ Alcohol-based mouthwash
It can dry out your mouth and disrupt your oral microbiome. Saliva protects your teeth, so reducing it can increase your risk for cavities and irritation.

🔟 Natural tooth powders
Most do not contain ingredients proven to strengthen enamel, and some clay-based powders have been found to contain trace heavy metals.

SAVE this before you buy another dental product you don’t need and SHARE it with a friend who’s tired of wasting money on gimmicks.

You tell me you keep getting cavities… but then I find out:

🥤 Your daily drink lineup is caramel lattes, soda, Gatorade, and Red Bull
🍭 You’re snacking on sugar throughout the day
🪥 Your toothbrush should’ve been replaced months ago
🦷 You haven’t been to the dentist in years
😬 You never floss
⏱️ You brush for 10 seconds and call it a day

Cavities don’t just appear out of nowhere. They are the result of small habits repeated every day.

The good news? Most cavities are preventable when you know what’s causing them.
