Understanding the anatomy of the jaw joint is crucial for treating TMJ disorders. When we understand how the jaw joint works, we can take a more effective orthopedic approach to issues within the jaw joint. This allows us to see exactly what is going on within the TMJ, so we can give our patients the treatment options they really need.

Mouth guards are mouthpieces that act like a knee brace by supporting the jaw joint. They are usually worn at night to help keep you from clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth.
The most effective mouth guards for treating TMJ disorders are custom made and prescribed by your dentist. We don't usually recommend going and getting an over-the-counter mouth guard because they aren't designed to fit in your unique mouth.

When you are dealing with TMJ pain we recommend going on a soft food diet. Eating softer foods gives your jaw joint a chance to rest, which helps reduce inflammation and pain. Soup, cooked vegetables, pasta, and soft fruit can help your body get the nutrition it needs and allows your jaw joint to heal well.

Orthodontic treatments for TMJ disorders help correct a misaligned bite, which can cause damage in the jaw joint. Your jaws and teeth work together as a system. If one part of that system isn’t working properly it can affect everything else. Orthodontics can be used to correct issues and keep the system functioning properly.
Every part of your body works together as part of a system. And your mouth is no different. Your jaw joint, muscles, and teeth are all designed to function together. If one part of this system isn’t functioning properly, then the rest of the pieces have to pick up the slack. For example, if your teeth aren’t coming together properly your jaw has to work harder to bite and chew. This extra work puts a strain on the joint. And over time it will begin to break down.
Misalignment in your teeth can push everything out of its natural position, which can lead to clenching and teeth grinding. Clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth causes your joints to break down over time.

When you are dealing with TMJ pain, it's important to avoid food that is hard, crunchy, or that requires a lot of chewing. Apples, crusty bread, uncooked vegetables, and tough meat make your jaw joint work harder, which causes more damage and more pain.

Dental implants have many benefits. They allow you to smile with confidence and eat whatever you want after your teeth have fallen out or been extracted. Dental implants also help protect the health of your mouth.
They help promote jaw health, keep your teeth from shifting, and protect your gums from infection.
Dental implants help keep your mouth healthy for decades after you lose your natural teeth, ensuring that you can continue to smile with confidence for the rest of your life.

“One of the things as surgeons, operating on the jaw joint and seeing as many patients as we do with TMJ disorders, is I really wish that we would treat these conditions earlier." - Dr. Bolding.
We encourage patients who are dealing with TMJ issues to treat them early. If your TMJ disorder is mild, you should be able to treat it conservatively with over-the-counter pain medication and heat/ice therapy. Resting the joint by going on a soft food diet can also help prevent further damage.
However, if these treatments do not help you find the relief you’re looking for, you should talk to your doctor or a specialist as early as possible. Talk to someone who understands what is going on inside your jaw joint. They may be able to uncover the root cause and offer more suitable treatment options.

Knowing what to expect during the recovery process is just as important as knowing how to prepare for TMJ surgery. It’s important to take care of yourself in the days and weeks following your surgery so you can recover well.
We recommend going on a soft food diet in the days following your procedure. This will give your joint a chance to heal.

What you can expect during your TMJ surgery will depend on your procedure.
In general, however, you will need to bring any paperwork and your ID. If you are getting open joint surgery and are staying in the hospital, you will need to bring anything you may need overnight.
Wear lose fitting clothing and please don't wear makeup or jewelry.

Knowing how to prepare for TMJ surgery will help you feel more at ease and will make the whole process go smoothly.
Make sure to ask any questions you have, even if it seems silly. Also, try to get everything you'll need for after your procedure. Get any soft foods that you'll want to eat, fulfill any prescription medications, and pain medication.
You will also need to stop smoking before your surgery because it can have an impact on how your body heals.
