You booked a cleaning. Simple enough, right?

Not always.

There are different types of dental cleanings, and the one you need depends on the health of your teeth and gums.

Routine Cleaning
This is what most people think of as their six-month cleaning. It removes plaque and tartar buildup and helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Scaling and Root Planing
Often called a “deep cleaning.” This is used when there are signs of gum disease and buildup extends below the gumline. Treatment may be completed in sections rather than all at once.

Periodontal Maintenance
This is ongoing care after treatment for periodontal disease. These appointments are typically scheduled more frequently than routine cleanings to help manage gum health.

Debridement
When there is significant buildup, it can sometimes make it difficult to properly evaluate the teeth and gums. A debridement removes that heavier buildup so we can get a clearer picture of what’s going on.

So if your dentist recommends something other than a routine cleaning, there’s a reason for it.

The goal is to give your teeth and gums the level of care they actually need.

“We just have bad teeth in our family.” Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing: cavities themselves aren’t genetic.

What does run in families? The way we eat. How (and how often) we brush and floss. How much we snack or sip on sugary drinks throughout the day. Even the habits we picked up as kids from watching our parents.

Cavities form when bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar and produce acid that wears down enamel. So when cavities seem to “run in the family,” shared habits are usually doing a lot more work than DNA.

(There are rare genetic conditions that affect enamel development, but that’s a different thing entirely from just being “prone to cavities.”)

The bottom line: you don’t have to accept cavities as your family’s fate. The habits that got passed down can also be changed.

Cavities aren’t genetic.

Cavities happen when bacteria in your mouth meet sugar. That creates acid, and over time, that acid wears down enamel and leads to decay.

So if it feels like “bad teeth” run in your family... it’s probably not your genes.

It’s your habits. Families tend to share the same diet, the same brushing routines, the same sugary snacks and drinks. That’s what makes cavities look hereditary when they’re really just... familiar.

(Yes, there are rare genetic conditions that affect enamel strength. But for most of us? Genetics isn’t the culprit.)

Here’s the good part: most of what causes cavities is within your control.

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing daily. Being mindful of how often you’re reaching for something sugary. And catching small areas of decay before they become big problems.
