Cavities + cancer. For almost 30 years I have been committed to the overall health of our patients. It was easy to recognize that in order for a patient to be healthy overall, they had to have a healthy mouth. The studies are now pouring in everyday to support what we have known clinically from spending time with our patients and collaborating with them on their wellness journey.
It isn’t just about cavities. The fact that we repair a damaged part of your body that has such a huge role in function, nutrition, and self esteem…in our office, while you are awake…with materials that do not tolerate moisture or any contaminations (dental assistants are the heroes in making this possible for you—please make sure you thank yours)…while we also care for your anxiety and discomfort…for less of an investment than your appointment with the hairdresser for something that might last 3 months…is beyond imagination. But that is only the surface, we make recommendations for your whole health. The beverage industry is making wellness difficult for you. In dentistry, we try to make everything so comfortable and to not scare our patients. This helps to build trust and relationships but it has made dentistry a perfect target for abuse by dental insurance and it keeps much truth from our patients. I am always thinking I want to share more research with our patients but I am so busy doing dentistry that I don’t get that done. I’m on a flight to be able to do even more for our patients and I had a moment to write this while I’m traveling. This study shows a more than 2fold risk of gastric cancer with daily use of a sugar-sweetened beverage…this includes sports drinks and juices. It is about so much more than cavities and this is the tip of the iceberg.
