What is the difference between a prophylaxis and a periodontal maintenance cleaning. A regular prophylaxis is basically a preventative methodology while periodontal maintenance is taking care of an existing problem. Once you lose bone it does not return unless the doctor can graft the area. This means that once you have periodontal disease disease you need constant maintenance to avoid continuation of the disease process. The ADA suggests three month periodontal maintenance visits to help prevent disease recurrence.
