This patient came to us dealing with severe wear, breakage, and discoloration that had been building for years. Most people assume cavities are the biggest threat to their teeth. They’re a real risk, but they’re not the number one reason adults lose teeth.⁠

That title actually belongs to periodontal disease, and it almost always starts with something people ignore, bleeding gums.⁠
It starts small. Plaque buildup irritates the gums, causing them to bleed when you brush or floss.⁠

Left untreated, that irritation becomes gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease that’s still reversible with the right care.⁠

Keep ignoring it, and it progresses into periodontitis. At this stage, the infection moves below the gumline and starts breaking down the bone that holds your teeth in place.⁠

Left even longer, that bone loss becomes permanent. Teeth can loosen, shift, or need to be removed, not because of decay, but because there’s no longer enough bone to hold them in place.⁠

Poor oral hygiene puts you at risk for both cavities and gum disease, but gum disease is often the one that goes unnoticed the longest.⁠
