There have been recent reports in the media regarding scheduling routine dental visits during this time. Basically the media alarmed patients unnecessarily by mis-representing the World Health Organization's report on interim guidance.
To clarify matters I am posting view of the WHO Chief dental Officer. "WHO Chief Dental Officer Benoit Varenne, Ph.D., also expressed concerns about media coverage of the interim guidance in an Aug. 13 email to global dental leaders. Dr. Varenne said, “Unfortunately, a number of media headlines intentionally or not – when they are referring to the WHO guidance, did not mention that the recommendation to delay routine oral health care is only suggested in an intense uncontrolled community transmission scenario. A scenario that [does] not fit with the current situation of [most countries] around the world.” Dr. Varenne added, “So please be aware of the missing information sometimes disseminated by the media that could increase fear and concern of patients seeking oral health care. I think we have all to play a part in sharing with the public, national dental associations and health authorities the full story provided in the guidance document.”

Fast Company (6/15, Cohen) reported that a new study “identifies the businesses that have the best overall risk-benefit profiles when weighing important factors such as essential value to shoppers and the economy, as well as relative risk of contracting COVID-19 – or as one researcher put it, which businesses give us the most bang for our buck.” For the study, “data crunchers at MIT analyzed 26 categories of businesses by a dozen metrics for necessity and crowdedness,” determining that banks, dentists, colleges, and universities are the “most essential and safest” businesses to visit during the pandemic. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Dear Patients, Family and Friends:
We hope this post finds you and your family in good health. Our community has been through a lot over the last few months, and all of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your safety.
Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice and you may have seen this during your visits to our office. Our infection control processes are made so that when you receive care, it’s both safe and comfortable. We want to tell you about the infection control procedures we follow in our practice to keep patients and staff safe.
Using advice from the American Dental Association, Center for Disease Control and the Illinois State Dental Board, You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our patients and staff. For example:
• Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office. We will also take your temperature to make sure you are well.
• We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. In addition, before treatment, we will ask all patients to swish with a Mouthwash Peroxide rinse before any exam.
• You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys and so forth since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect. We have air filtration units with HEPA Filters and UV Light in the Treatment rooms to filter the air and kill harmful bacteria and viruses.
• Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.
• We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time. To help reduce the number of people in the waiting room, we recommend that patients are not accompanied by any guests to ensure the safety of all.
We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice. To make an appointment, please call our office at: 773-792-3200
Thank you for being our patient. We value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors and friends.
Sincerely,
Thomas W. Pissios, DDS
Athina Foukas, RDH

For Patients:

Notice for Patients!

Gov. J.B. Pritzker extended a "stay-at-home" order for all residents, directing people to remain in their homes except for essentials until the end of April to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Until further notice, the Illinois State Dental Society recommends that dentists cease all in-person dental treatment except for dental emergencies. The Illinois State Dental Society also recommends that the public only seek dental care in case of dental emergencies.
If you are experiencing a Dental Emergency, ie Infection, Swelling, Severe Pain, please call our office or emergency number to get information for treatment. Thank you and stay safe !

I think this is all very new and needs further study, but I find it interesting none the less. To quote the author: "It could turn out that bacterial infections are just one possible avenue for dementia and mental decline to progress in what is a notoriously complex disease.

“Alzheimer’s is a complex disorder, not a one stop shop,” Reiss says."

If it enters the brain, one species of gum-disease-causing bacteria might trigger chemical changes linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Even though our office recommends the Sonicare Electric Toothbrush because recent studies have shown it does a better job on the Bio-Film around the tooth, I found this article helpful to patients looking to buy a new electric toothbrush.
