‘Rapid evolution’ is causing human faces to shrink, and babies are now being born without some of their teeth.

Think humans stopped evolving? Think again.

Humans are still evolving—and in ways that are becoming surprisingly visible. A new study led by Dr. Teghan Lucas of Flinders University reveals that changes in diet and lifestyle are reshaping our anatomy. One of the most striking shifts? Fewer people are being born with wisdom teeth. As our diets require less chewing and more food is processed or cooked, our jaws are becoming smaller, leaving less room for these once-essential molars.

The research, published in the Journal of Anatomy, describes this as “micro-evolution”—evolutionary changes occurring over relatively short timespans. Alongside vanishing wisdom teeth, scientists also found increasing occurrences of extra bones in limbs, abnormal bone connections in feet, and even a third artery in some people’s arms. These subtle but measurable traits are evidence that human evolution isn’t slowing down—it’s accelerating in response to how we live today.
