Happy hump day! I know it’s been a while and have been off in my IG routine - now that I’ve been back to work and settled in sort of hopefully I’ll get back into it! I just wanted to pop in and say 👋- hope you all are doing well and staying safe!

I may have not said much on this platform recently, but trust me I’ve been here - reading, listening, discussing, consuming, reflecting, evolving. I, just like the rest of the world, have been experiencing a myriad of emotions and I was truly at a loss - trying to pinpoint what I wanted to say has been difficult so bear with me.

As a South Asian American that grew up in a pretty diverse town and went to colleges in urban settings - I can count on my hand the number of times I experienced racism - not even close to what the black community has endured. As for the cultural racism within the Indian community ( fair skin is favored over dark skin) - we still have ways to go to change that mentality. But what I do want to highlight is that as a first generation South Asian I never had discussions about racism with my parents or what we should be doing when we witness or experience it. My family, like many other immigrant families, were focused on working hard to provide for their children. We studied hard, were polite to all our neighbors, kept our lawns neat, paid our taxes, engaged mainly within our community - and never addressed these issues - “by the books” as me and my family jokingly call it.

But now, after absorbing and reflecting on everything going on the past few days and weeks - I’ve realized my shortcomings, as maybe many of you have. And because I am a mother now and am really seeing it through a different lens - I realize I do have to be active and even proactive in the change. Change always starts at home and the conversations are always the most difficult with those closest to you. But it is my job to teach my children the history, the issues, and the need for social change to make this world better.

Happy happy fourth birthday dear Mila. You are my first born - feisty yet sweet, stubborn yet loving, willful yet kind. I can’t believe you are already four and during these trying times you have taught us what’s really important. These past few weeks together have been precious, trying, and insightful - I wouldn’t change a thing. And I love how you are content with some homemade funfetti cupcakes with mermaid sprinkles - I look forward to spending the day with you doing the simple things. I hope you have a beautiful day - you have an exciting life ahead of you and the whole world to explore... I look forward to witnessing your journey.

✨IT WAS ALL A DREAM✨⁣

These past two months felt like a dream.⁣

Life as we know it changed what felt like overnight.⁣

I was adapting to my life at home with my family.⁣

But it wasn’t a dream - it was a surreal reality - and it took time to accept.⁣

We fell into a new routine, this “new normal” we are calling it.⁣

My husband had a work from home schedule and I had a stay at home schedule.⁣

Home schooling begun (not just for my kids, but for myself too).⁣

We went through our daily routines in a haze.⁣

Our minds preoccupied with the financial goals that wouldn’t be met, the career adjustments we have to make, and the lifelong dreams that might be delayed.⁣

And what happened?⁣

We fell off track it seemed, our kids schedules went out the window, exercise was almost nonexistent, and meals became a chore.⁣

But as things slowly begin to open - time to snap back to reality.⁣

My husband and I have created a decontamination routine for when I come home from work.⁣

We are buckling down on the kids schedules - meal times, nap times and bedtimes (yup, sleep training again and it’s not fun).⁣

We have embraced our “new normal” as a family - the good with the bad, the ups with the downs, the old with the new.⁣

I’ve had this time to mope, reflect and change - now it’s time to embrace it and put it all into action.⁣

It’s all good, continue reaching for those stars.⁣

✨HYGIENE FOR YOUR TOOTHBRUSH✨⁣

Have you ever noticed a white film on your toothbrushes? How about some gunk at the base of your power toothbrush or charger? Gross right?! Let me show you some hygiene tips to keep your toothbrushes as clean as possible!⁣

That gunk that builds up over time on your toothbrushes is a combination of water, residual toothpaste, bacteria and even mold! It’s not uncommon for mold and bacteria to build up on surfaces, especially where there is water or dampness (shampoo bottles, shower tiles, etc.) Moreover, germs are everywhere! In our mouth, on surfaces, and even released when we flush the toilet! But don’t fret there are steps you can take to maintain your toothbrushes health.⁣

DOs:⁣

1️⃣ Replace toothbrush (manual) or toothbrush head (power) every 3 months⁣

2️⃣ After brushing, rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove paste or debris⁣

3️⃣ Wipe handle of toothbrush with warm damp cloth⁣

4️⃣ Store toothbrush upright and open so it can air dry thoroughly⁣

DON’Ts:⁣

1️⃣ Don’t place in microwave, dishwasher or boiling water⁣

2️⃣ Don’t share your toothbrush with other people - can spread bacteria and germs⁣

3️⃣ Don’t store in container or medicine cabinet - closed spaces promotes bacteria growth⁣

4️⃣ Avoid disinfectants and sanitizers since it can increase opportunities for cross contamination ⁣

EXTRA CLEANING:⁣

If you want a deeper clean, you can try methods of sanitizing, such as UV machines, but studies have not been definitive as to how much it can reduce bacteria growth. Studies have shown that white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, mouthwash can help reduce bacterial growth.Overall, these methods may make you feel better that you cleaned thoroughly but have not been proven to make a significant difference in your dental health and hygiene.⁣

During the times we live in, we are cleaning and wiping everything else, don’t forget your toothbrush! Give your brush some TLC and you’ll be continuing your good dental habits! Any questions, leave them below!⁣
