Last night, Dr. Licata joined the Parkway PTO Sports Teams Parents Groups Sponsor Fair to talk about something that matters a lot to our young athletes: mouthguards! πŸ¦·πŸ€βšΎ

Whether it's the baseball diamond, the basketball court, or any sport in between, protecting those smiles matters just as much as protecting the rest of the body.

It was great connecting with so many Parkway families and talking through simple ways to keep young athletes safe on and off the field.

Thanks to the PTO for having us!

Here's something a lot of people don't realize: your blood sugar and your gum health are related.

High blood sugar can make gum disease more likely, and if left untreated, gum disease can make blood sugar harder to keep in check.

It's part of why we like to know the full picture of your health, not just your teeth.

If you're managing diabetes, regular cleanings aren't just "nice to have"; they are part of your bigger health picture. Many people with diabetes benefit from cleanings every 3-4 months instead of twice-a-year.

Gum disease progresses rapidly in diabetics if the bacterial toxins aren't removed from your mouth quickly. It also gives us more chances to catch any changes early.

A few signs to look out for between visits: gums that bleed easily, puffiness or redness, a mouth that feels dry more often than usual, or sores that seem slow to heal.

None of these are a big deal on their own, but worth mentioning at your next dental visit so we can stay ahead of it together.

Here are our top back-to-school smile tips! πŸ‘‡

πŸͺ₯ Brush 2x a day with fluoride toothpaste - supervise until they can do it well solo (usually around age 8 or 9, sometimes longer!)
🍎 Swap sugary snacks for cheese, fruit, or nuts when possible
🦷 Braces? Pack a travel toothbrush + floss picks, and skip the sticky/crunchy foods that pop brackets
🏈 Playing fall sports? A mouthguard protects those teeth on the field
😴 Grinding at night? Ask us about a custom night guard
🚨 Know your plan: if a tooth gets knocked out or your child's in serious pain, keep our number handy so you can call right away

Here's something most of us were never taught - menopause doesn't just affect your bones, your mood, or your sleep; it affects your gums, too.

When estrogen declines, your gums become more vulnerable to inflammation, tissue loss, and disease. Add in the dry mouth that often comes with hormonal changes, and it's a perfect storm for your smile.

So, if you're noticing bleeding, recession, or bad breath that wasn't there before, it might not just be a "getting older" thing. It might be a hormone thing. And it's worth mentioning at your next visit.
We're paying attention to the whole picture, not just your teeth.

🦷✨ Happy National Oral Health Month from all of us at Licata Dental!

June is a month close to our hearts β€” because great oral health is something we're passionate about every single day, not just in June.

Here's something that might surprise you: your mouth is the gateway to your body. The American Dental Association reminds us every June that poor oral health isn't just about cavities β€” it's been linked to serious systemic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and more. Taking care of your smile is one of the most powerful things you can do for your overall well-being.

So this June, we're asking β€” how much do you really know about oral health? πŸ€”

We've put together a fun Smile Detective Quiz β€” 6 questions, all inspired by things real patients ask us every week. Work your way through the questions in our carousel and let us know in the comments how you do! πŸ‘‡

We'd love to see some perfect scores β€” but no pressure, that's what we're here for! πŸ˜„
