April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and early detection could save your life. As a dedicated advocate for oral cancer awareness and a member of the Head and Neck Cancer Team at the Morristown Medical Center, Dr. Begley strongly encourages performing monthly self-exams.

While risk factors include to***co and alcohol use, HPV, and prolonged sun exposure, oral cancer can affect anyone. Keep an eye out for persistent sores, red or white patches, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained lumps.

This Women's History Month we’re highlighting Dr. Kathy A. Banks, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a trailblazer in organized dentistry who made history as the first woman to serve as President of the New Jersey Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. A graduate of Rutgers University and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Banks is a Diplomat of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a volunteer faculty member at Rutgers Dental School, and represents New Jersey in the AAOMS House of delegates.

All month long (and beyond) we celebrate pioneers like Dr. Banks who continue to inspire the next generation of female surgeons and strengthen the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Roscoe F. Lee, the first Black American to be certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) in 1947.

A 1922 Howard University College of Dentistry graduate, Lee went on to specialize in oral surgery at the Howard University Hospital (called Freedman's Hospital at the time), where he was appointed the newly formed oral surgery department's Chief of Staff and Senior Visiting Oral Surgeon.

A respected surgeon, educator, and leader at a time when opportunities for Black clinicians were limited, Dr. Lee was an involved member of the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society and a strong proponent for racial integration in dentistry. His commitment to excellence, mentorship, and the advancement oral healthcare helped open doors for diverse future generations of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
