Most people bite their cheek occasionally in moments of inattention. That’s nothing to worry about. However, some patients find themselves biting their cheek accidentally a lot more often. This may indicate a more deeply-rooted problem such as a misalignment of teeth, TMD or simply a nervous habit. We can help align teeth, or adjust dentures or bridges, to prevent frequent cheek-biting and improve your bite. Be sure to let us know if this is a concern at your next dental visit.

Maintaining a good oral health routine can help prevent pneumonia. Recent studies have found that improved oral care for seniors reduces the risk of aspiration pneumonia, which is believed to be caused by breathing bacteria into the lungs. Not only that, denture-wearers can reduce their risk by removing the denture while they sleep. So remember to brush and floss after each meal and visit us regularly!

For most people, removing your dentures before you go to sleep is the healthiest option. It reduces your risk of plaque buildup, infections and irritations and gives your gums and bones a chance to relax. Studies have shown that removing your dentures at night also reduces the risk of aspiration pneumonia. When you remove your dentures be sure to clean them gently and leave them to soak in water or a soaking solution. Give your mouth a clean before you put your dentures back in.

You may have been instructed to wear your dentures overnight to help with sleep apnea. If that’s the case, be sure to remove your dentures for 5-6 hours during the day to give your mouth a break.

Dentures need to be cleaned daily in order to maintain good oral hygiene.
Remove and rinse your dentures after eating to remove bits of food and prevent staining. Then use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your mouth and remove any adhesive (if you use it).
Once a day, soak them in non-abrasive denture cleanser and gently scrub them with a soft-bristled brush.
Overnight, keep your dentures moist by soaking them in warm or cool water or a mild denture solution. Rinse them thoroughly in the morning before putting them back in.
Any questions about cleaning your dentures? We’re always here to help!
