Those wisdom tooth / teeth consults we recommend, there's a really good reason!

Wisdom teeth can sometimes silently damage the healthy tooth beside them — even before any pain develops.

Many impacted wisdom teeth grow in a tilted position toward the second molar, creating a deep area that is very difficult to clean properly. Food particles, plaque, and bacteria can become trapped there for years without obvious symptoms.

Over time, this hidden space may lead to cavities, gum inflammation, bone loss, and damage to the neighboring molar — an important tooth for long-term chewing function. In many cases, the problem is only discovered on dental X-rays after significant damage has already occurred.

By the time symptoms appear, the nearby tooth may already require a filling, root canal treatment, crown, or even extraction in severe cases. Impacted wisdom teeth may also increase the risk of recurrent swelling, bad breath, gum infection, and repeated food trapping.

Not all wisdom teeth need removal. However, when a wisdom tooth is pressing against the adjacent tooth or increasing the risk of decay and periodontal damage, early removal may help prevent more serious complications later on. Pain is not always the first sign of dental disease.

Sharing a cool find with you today!
Neanderthals used stone tools to treat cavities nearly 59,000 years ago, according to a newly studied tooth discovered in Siberia.

Scientists found a Neanderthal molar with a deep drilled hole reaching the pulp — the inner tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. Microscopic analysis revealed scratch patterns consistent with intentional drilling using a sharp stone tool, likely to remove infected tissue and relieve severe tooth pain.
The tooth also showed signs of healing and continued use afterward, suggesting the individual survived the procedure.

Researchers additionally found grooves linked to toothpick use, indicating Neanderthals may have cleaned their teeth long before modern dentistry existed.

This could represent the oldest known evidence of complex dental treatment in human history.

Snoozing with your Mouth Open? It could cause a problem!

Many people sleep with their mouth open without even realizing it — and their teeth may quietly pay the price.

When the mouth stays open during sleep, saliva evaporates much faster, leaving the mouth significantly drier for hours overnight.

That matters because saliva is one of the body’s most important natural defenses for oral health. It helps wash away bacteria, neutralize harmful acids, protect enamel, support remineralization, and maintain a healthier balance inside the mouth.

When saliva levels drop, bacteria can grow more easily in the dry environment. This is why nighttime mouth breathing is commonly linked to bad breath, dry mouth and throat, sticky morning feeling, increased plaque buildup, higher cavity risk, gum irritation, and tooth sensitivity.

Research suggests that chronic dry mouth can also disrupt the oral microbiome and weaken the mouth’s natural protective system over time.

A dry mouth is far less capable of protecting teeth and soft tissues from acid attacks and bacterial damage.
If someone regularly wakes up with dry mouth, bad breath, or throat dryness, nighttime mouth breathing may be an important hidden cause worth addressing.
