Ever bitten into something and felt a quick zing, then a second sharper one right as you let go?

That bite-and-release pattern is one of the clearest signs of a cracked tooth, and it is worth having looked at even when you cannot see a thing in the mirror. Some cracks are too fine to spot without a close exam.

The repair depends on how far the crack has traveled. A shallow crack in the enamel can often be bonded closed with a filling. Once a crack reaches the softer layer underneath or crosses one of the raised points on a molar, the tooth starts to flex slightly every time you chew, and that flexing is what lets a crack keep spreading. A crown wraps the whole tooth so it moves as one piece instead.
