FAQ's about Invisalign
"How does Invisalign work?"
Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are changed weekly to slowly move your teeth into their desired position. Most people are done with treatment in less than a year.

"How often do I have to be seen during treatment?"
You will be seen every 10-16 weeks throughout treatment for check ups. At each of these visits the doctor will monitor your progress and provide your next set of clear aligners for you.

"I was told I was not a candidate for Invisalign in the past. Is that still true?"
Invisalign technology has come a long way and nowadays there are very few patients who cannot be treated with Invisalign clear aligners. If you have been told you weren't a candidate in the past but you still desire to refresh your smile, we would like to encourage you to attend our event and learn what we may be able to do for you now.

"Will my insurance cover Invisalign treatment?"
Adult orthodontic benefits can be used to help pay for Invisalign treatment. This frequently provides anywhere from $500-$2500 in assistance towards treatment. We also offer financing options to cover the balance. All of these options will be discussed with you at your complimentary consultation.

"I am interested in Invisalign but I'm not available on March 23rd. Can I schedule a consultation for another day?"
Absolutely! We would be happy to see for a complimentary Invisalign consultation at your convenience. You just wouldn't be able to take advantage of our special offers and prizes we will have on the 23rd.

"Can I use money in my FSA/HSA for Invisalign treatment?"
Yes, Invisalign is an eligible expense and may be paid for with money from a flex spending account or health spending account.

Dear Patients,

We are reaching out to update you on our most recent COVID screening procedures. As always, our office follows strict infection control and sterilization/disinfection practices and looks to the CDC, the ADA, OSHA and our local health department for accurate information and the most current guidelines for healthcare providers. We are sincerely grateful for the trust and confidence you have demonstrated by coming to your appointments throughout the pandemic and adhering to our COVID related safety measures. Our goal is to be able to continue providing high quality dental care while keeping both patients and staff healthy and safe. To that end, here are our most current protocols:

~We ask that you wear a mask to your appointment and keep the mask on at all times when you are here except when you are receiving treatment.

~Bring a sweater or jacket since the temperature will be set low for the comfort of our staff wearing personal protective equipment.

~Do not bring a lot of personal items (drinks, bags, purses, etc) into the office.

~Only the patient may come into the office. Exceptions will be made for children under the age of 10 and those requiring assistance with transport/transfer/language.

~When you arrive at the office, in order to minimize the number of patients in the reception area, we ask that you call 434-220-4803 and we will tell you when to come to the door.

~You will be asked some simple screening questions about COVID-19 symptoms or exposure and you may have your temperature checked.

~Regardless of your vaccination status, if you have been around anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days, please call our office prior to your appointment.

~Please do not come to your appointment if you have any symptoms of illness or are feeling unwell. We will happily reschedule your appointment.

We look forward to seeing you at your next scheduled appointment!

We are coming up on a huge milestone anniversary at our office. We thought this would be the perfect time to highlight and for you to get to know our wonderful team. Here is Dr. David Gilrain!

A few reflections on my dental journey as we celebrate our 20th year as Gilrain and Brooks, DDS…

I remember a lot of visits to the dentist growing up. My family moved several times, so I saw quite a few different dentists. The first I recall had his office attached to his home, which even as a small child, I remember thinking must be the normal way and was pretty cool. Later, when I was in elementary school my dentist had a small office upstairs over the pharmacy and the saloon in a small rural town. I still hear him telling my mother, "Well, Mrs. Gilrain, David has 11 cavities"! I went there a lot, but it was always a good experience. He was patient and kind and had a large fish tank with colorful fish, a sunken ship, and a treasure chest. I thought going there was really pretty great!

We moved to London, England for 3 years when I was in 6th grade. I loved living in the city, and I saw both a dentist and orthodontist while we lived there. Their offices were both in the first floors of large old interesting Victorian residences and I was occasionally served tea while waiting for my appointments!
Back in a small town in Connecticut during high school, I met one of my best friends and soccer teammates (years later to be my future Best Man). His dad was a tall, lively, charismatic guy who happened to be associate dean at UConn Dental School nearby. Although he wasn't my personal dentist, he was helpful in my seeing dentistry as a possible career, and he helped arrange for me to spend a month "internship" at the school while I was a junior at Middlebury College in Vermont. I shadowed several dental students and various practicing general dentists and specialists who were all great, caring people observing how they treated and interacted with their patients. I also got some hands-on training/ practice in the dental lab, and came to the realization that, yes, I wanted to become a dentist.

Although my high school friend and I went to different colleges, we both ended up going to the same great dental school at UNC. After graduating with honors, I completed a 2-year General Practice Residency at UVA, serving as chief resident in my second year with some terrific, fun, smart co-residents and the fantastic and talented dental faculty and staff. I then practiced with a very skillful longtime Charlottesville dentist, Richard Heath in Charlottesville for a number of years until Cynthia Brooks and I formed Gilrain and Brooks, DDS 20 years ago in 2001.

Oh, my gosh! We have been so fortunate! Our staff and our patients are outstanding. We treasure and value all so very much, but I must especially recognize a few who have been with us from the start, or nearly so. Wendy, who has been my chairside assistant for well over 2 decades and is so competent and awesome - reliably and thoroughly helping me in every way, every day - just the best! Jenne has been quite essential to our practice up front and behind the scenes since we opened 20 years ago. She gets things done! And we would be so lost without her excellent help. Sheri, one of our top-notch dental hygienists, has been so helpful, so often, in so many ways - both before and during the return after the pandemic lockdown, and has taken such great care of our patients for 17 years with a strong positive attitude. And of course, my stellar, exceptional dental partner, Cynthia Brooks. What a fabulous adventure together! Steady, encouraging, conscientious, insightful, determined, skillful - sharing this dental practice journey together has been tremendous!

It is truly an honor and privilege to be able to have this dental career with such marvelous new and longtime patients and our remarkable team of dental staff through the years - both past and present! Dedicated, kind, hard-working, thoughtful, compassionate, friendly, and fun! I do not know how we got so lucky all these years!!! And SO above and beyond in this past difficult year of the Covid-19 pandemic to keep both our patients and each other safe and still cared for. Wow! I am so very grateful for all of you! Thanks!!! Cheers and here’s to plenty more!

When away from work, Dr. Gilrain enjoys hiking in our beautiful mountains, time at the beach with his family, reading, watching soccer and enjoying time with family and friends.

Dr. Gilrain is married to his lovely wife, Joan, a Charlottesville native, and they have two wonderful grown, fun children, Will and Melissa. You guys make it all worthwhile!

We are coming up on a huge milestone anniversary at our office. We thought this would be the perfect time to highlight and for you to get to know our wonderful team. Here is one our of hygienists, Margaret.

My name is Margaret Guerreri and have been practicing Dental Hygiene for 14 years. I attended the Medical College of Virginia and graduated in 2005. I am a native of Charlottesville as well as my family and decided to start my profession here because of them. I have an older brother who is married with a daughter and also a twin brother. In July of 2005, I started out working full time for two different dentists. I continued full time until I had my son Emmit in 2012. After some time off, I decided to go back working part time. For the past year now, I have picked up some temporary jobs. Temping is what brought me to the office of Drs. Gilrain and Brooks. After a few months, it led to a permanent position on Wednesdays and Thursday Mornings. Having the flexibility of only working part time gives me the opportunity to spend time out in the real world as well as with my own family. In February 2017, we welcomed our newest addition, daughter Annabelle. I love working for a welcoming and family oriented practice such as this one.
