Twenty five years ago on Mother’s Day, 1998, I graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. A little less than a year ago, I earned the Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry.

You know what’s even harder to believe, than that I’ve been fixing teeth for 25 years? It’s that I don’t look a day older! 😎😁 If it weren’t for the veneers that made such a big improvement in my smile, you couldn’t even tell which photo was which, right?

Charlotte steak house recommendation incoming!

Today was our first dinner at Oak Steakhouse near SouthPark Mall, but oh my, it won’t be our last! The 8oz filet with Blue Cheese Crust was OUT OF THIS WORLD. I’ve had amazing steaks at numerous steakhouses around the country & the world, and this was up among THE BEST.
Not only that, they made Brussel Sprouts that I actually wanted to try (first time that’s ever happened in my life), and after trying, I actually wanted more! That’s borderline miraculous.

Loved the ambience and quiet of a Thursday evening, not crowded at all, very friendly service, and just superb food. The freshly baked rolls and butter to start are also SCRUMPTIOUS.

For fine dining in Charlotte, this is now one of our favorites.

These DIY aligner companies can really screw up your teeth. Including a young lady just last week with a mouthful of cavities. She was told Byte could fix her teeth in 4 months. HA! Not even close. Her Invisalign case will take 12-18 months to do right.

The ad is correct that expensive isn't always better, but the same can be said of cheap, too. It's often true: you get what you pay for.

Most people think of fillings as one of the easiest things that dentists do, but back-to-back fillings are often one of the procedures we dislike most. Removing decay and cracks, as conservatively as possible, then building natural contours, contacts between teeth, and getting the bite just right aren't actually easy! It's one of the fundamental skills needed to be a great dentist though, and it's something we take a lot of pride in.

One of the best parts of being a dentist, is growing up and growing older with patients; we get to know each other as more than just doctor and patient.
Richard first walked into my original Southpark location all the way back in January 2002. When he asked me to do a Smile Makeover for him (crowns, veneers, and a bridge) on his top and bottom teeth, he had 1 request, “I want my smile so bright, people see it coming into the room before the rest of me,” said with a laugh that we learned to recognize the moment he walked in the door.
That was 21 years ago this month. It has been an honor and genuine pleasure to be Richard’s dentist for over 2 decades.

All that made today a sad parting. He’s moved to Atlanta to be closer to family, and the drive is too long for him to do regularly, making today his last appointment with us.

I really shouldn’t be surprised, I guess, but this feels a little like when my Dad passed away 2 years ago. Richard and I often disagreed about things, but we always had fun and joked about it. He is an absolute treasure of a gentleman, and I will miss him dearly.

Not dental related, but a personal milestone celebrated - my first 1,000 calorie workout in years!
I was getting close in June 2022, but then our daughter had jaw surgery, then Fara & I got COVID in late July, then travel & rich food in early September, then a horrible chest cold that lingered, then travel for Continuing Ed, then Thanksgiving. I finally started exercising again regularly in early December, and now I’ve managed to push past where I was in June!
No, not a New Years Resolution, as I quit doing those years ago, but a renewed commitment to physical & emotional health, which helps me be a better dentist, too.
