Why is multidisciplinary cleft care so important?

Cleft and Craniofacial care is about much more than surgery. As children grow, their needs evolve, requiring expert care from a variety of specialists throughout childhood and adolescence.

Our team is a multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial team, which is considered the gold standard for cleft care. By bringing specialists together, we provide coordinated, comprehensive care that focuses on every aspect of a child’s growth, development, function, and well-being.

We are proud to be accredited by the American Cleft Palate–Craniofacial Association (ACPA), meaning our team meets nationally recognized standards for providing high-quality, patient-centered cleft and craniofacial care.

Each month, our multidisciplinary team comes together to discuss every patient and develop individualized treatment plans. During our team clinic, families have the opportunity to see multiple specialists in a single visit—including plastic surgery, ENT, speech-language pathology, audiology, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, genetics, nursing, physical therapy, social work, and other specialists as needed.

This collaborative approach improves communication between providers, reduces the burden of scheduling multiple appointments, and ensures that every member of your child’s care team is working together toward the same goals.

From his very first lip repair to his alveolar bone graft, it has been a privilege to watch this incredible young man grow. 💙

💡 **Did you know?**
Cleft care doesn’t end after the first year of life. While lip and palate repairs happen early, many children continue their cleft journey through childhood and adolescence. Additional procedures—such as an alveolar bone graft, speech evaluations, orthodontic treatment, dental care, and, for some, jaw or nose surgery—may all be important parts of comprehensive cleft care.

That’s why a multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial team follows patients for many years, ensuring they receive the right care at the right time as they grow.

Here’s to another milestone and many more smiles ahead! 💙

July is Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness Month 💜

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible strength, resilience, and bravery of the children and families we have the privilege of caring for.

Every scar tells a story. Every milestone is hard-earned. Every smile reflects courage, determination, and the unwavering love of family.

Cleft and craniofacial differences are just one part of each child’s story—they do not define who they are. Throughout July, we’ll be sharing educational information, answering common questions, highlighting the amazing members of our multidisciplinary team, and celebrating the journeys of the patients and families who inspire us every day.

Thank you to our families for allowing us to be part of your journey. Your strength inspires us, and we are honored to walk alongside you.
