Where does the bone used for a bone graft actually come from?

Depending on your needs, bone graft material may come from your own body, a human donor, or another source such as bovine bone. While that might sound surprising, each type of graft has a specific purpose.

🦷 Autogenous grafts use your own bone and contain living cellular components that can support new bone formation.

🦷 Allogenic grafts use carefully processed donor bone that acts as a scaffold for your own bone to grow into.

🦷 Xenogenic grafts typically use highly processed bovine bone and also provide a framework for new bone growth.

So, why might you need a bone graft in the first place? Bone grafting can help rebuild areas where bone has been lost and create the support needed for treatments such as dental implants.
