When I took over this dental practice about seven years ago, I digitized all the old paper charts. Some of these records went back to the 1950s.

I found patient charts where a cleaning cost $2. Spoiler: we did have to raise the price on that a bit over the years.

It's kind of incredible to see that history and know that some of those same families are still coming here. Their kids, grandkids, great-grandkids are patients now, and I'm honored that they've stayed with the practice now that I'm here.

I really don't think that kind of continuity happens by accident. I think it's because people see they consistently get care they trust. I love knowing that we're treating generations of families, and I'm looking forward to keeping that tradition alive.

Having kids changed the way I talk to parents about their kids' oral health.

Before I had kids, it was easy to talk in theory. Brush twice a day, floss every night, limit sugar. Simple, right?

Then I had my own kids, and I realized it's very different when you're actually dealing with it. You're trying to get them to eat anything at all. You're fighting bedtime battles.

You're exhausted. The last thing you want is another power struggle over brushing teeth.

So now when parents tell me they're struggling to get their kid to brush, I actually get it. I tell them what works for one kid isn't going to work for another. My son hates mint-flavored toothpaste, so we use vanilla frosting flavor. My daughter loves orange creamsicle. You just have to find what works for yours.

It's easy to give advice when you're not in the trenches. Actually living it teaches you to be a lot more practical and a lot less preachy.

You can start as soon as your child has teeth. Or even sooner if there's something like a tongue or lip restriction that might be affecting feeding or speech development.

Starting early means we can catch things before they become problems. And it means your kid grows up thinking of the dentist as a normal, regular part of taking care of themselves instead of something scary.

How important is flossing for kids?

Whether your child needs to floss really depends on the spacing in their mouth.
We actually want more space in kids' mouths than we do in adult mouths. So if there's space between their teeth, flossing might not be as critical yet.

That said, we think flossing in general is a great habit to get into early. It's just that it's more important for some kids than others depending on the shape and size of their mouth.

That's the thing about kids' oral health—there's not one universal rule that applies to everyone. Every kid is different.

Like, if your gums bleed, that's from chronic inflammation. You probably have other signs and symptoms of inflammation in your body. Wear on your teeth can be a sign of airway issues, which could cause sleep apnea or other problems. Different signs on your teeth can be an early warning sign of gastric reflux, which is often related to a separate medical condition.

We're looking at all of that to help you be healthier in general, not just to fix your teeth.
